Abstract

ABSTRACT

Literature has a very close relationship to human life and reflects the life, thoughts, feelings, behavior and attitudes of human beings. The basic aim of literature is to give pleasure and enjoyment and be brought into a vast, close and get new experiences to life. In this study, it will be focused on analysis of social aspects of Great Gatsby novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

There are some basic reasons for the writer in choosing this topic. By reading a novel, we may acquire knowledge about how to appreciate literature and know the social stratification and the reason the main character reach his social status including the novel. Therefore, she was interested in analyzing the social aspects that relevance in F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, and decided to give the title of her thesis ”An Analysis on Social Aspects of Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald”. The problem of the study is: what social aspects are reflected in the Great Gatsby what makes the main character has big ambition to reach his social status?

The purpose of the study is to acquire the answer to the question intended in this study and gain better understanding on the content of the novel. The scope in this study is limited to social aspects analyses a certain social class and the reason main character reach his social status that include in novel

Subsequently, the findings are achieved by analyzing the quotations cited from the text on the basis of the social aspect that the writer has reviewed connecting to the first problem that Great Gatsby includes some social aspects performance from the statements and exposition in certain dialogue from each character such a culture and social stratification. In answering the second research problem, that is the reasons of main character change his social status, the writer analyzes their way reach social status belong to what class viewed from what they wear and how they speak English.

Conducting a closes look into F. Scott Fitzgerald, the writer concludes that the novel describes American society including the description about that culture and social stratification within. She also concludes that the main character's reason change his social status, leave his house and find out job as a bootlegging is his high ambition to married his lovely girl, Daisy

Eventually, the writer suggest that his study can enhance the understanding of social aspects in literature work also further and deeper study on Great Gatsby or other novels be conducted.
