Mary's motivation in Burnett's The Secret Garden

Novel is one of the literary works which contains a series of one's life journey shown through the book. Literary works can benefit someone as a means of entertainment and learning. One of the interesting ones is the novel entitled The Secret Garden. This novel is a classic English children's literature because the main character is a ten years old girl. This research aims to indicate the main character's motive system portrayed in the novel The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. This research study analyzed the journey of the main character, Mary, to pursue her goal so that she can feel satisfied. The researcher uses the Theory of Motivation by David C. McClelland to analyze the motives system portrayed by the main character, Mary. The research method requires multiple readings of the novel The Secret Garden. It can give a deep understanding so the researcher can identify and classify important information related to Mary’s motivation in reaching her satisfaction. The findings show all of Mary’s motives system and the characteristics of each motives system. In the novel The Secret Garden, Mary reveals that she has all the motives system, namely the achievement motive, the power motive, and the affiliative motive. On the achievement motive, Mary shows that she has all the characteristics indicating a high need for achievement. It is different from her power motive and affiliative motive; for these two motives, Mary only fulfills some of their characteristics. However, Mary shows that she has all of the motive systems, although she does not have all of the characteristics in each of them.

Novel merupakan salah satu karya sastra yang berisi rangkaian perjalanan hidup seseorang yang ditampilkan melalui buku. Karya sastra dapat memberikan manfaat bagi seseorang sebagai sarana hiburan dan pembelajaran. Salah satu yang menarik adalah novel berjudul The Secret Garden. Novel ini termasuk ke dalam sastra anak Inggris klasik karena tokoh utamanya adalah seorang gadis berusia sepuluh tahun. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menunjukkan system motif pada tokoh utama di novel The Secret Garden karya Frances Hodgson Burnett. Kajian penelitian ini menganalisis perjalanan tokoh utama, Mary untuk mengejar cita-citanya sehingga dia bisa merasa puas. Peneliti menggunakan Teori Motivasi oleh David C. McClelland untuk menganalisis sistem motif yang digambarkan oleh tokoh utama, Mary. Metode penelitian ini membutuhkan pembacaan novel The Secret Garden berkali-kali dan dapat memberikan pemahaman yang mendalam sehingga peneliti dapat mengidentifikasi dan mengklasifikasikan informasi-informasi penting terkait dengan motivasi Mary dalam mencapai kepuasannya. Analisis data menunjukkan semua sistem motif Mary dan karakteristik dari masing-masing sistem motif tersebut. Pada novel The Secret Garden, Mary menunjukkan bahwa dia memiliki semua sistem motif yaitu motif berprestasi, motif kekuasaan dan motif afiliasi. Pada motif berprestasi, Mary menunjukkan bahwa ia memiliki semua karakteristik yang menunjukkan kebutuhan berprestasi yang tinggi. Berbeda dengan motif kekuasaan dan motif afiliasi yang dimilikinya, untuk kedua motif tersebut Mary hanya memenuhi beberapa ciri yang ada di dalamnya.
