The effectiveness of minimal pairs in increasing students' pronunciation mastery among junior high school

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the minimal pairs technique in improving junior high school students’ pronunciation mastery. The research conducted at SMPN 4 Kota Mojokerto with the main problem addressed in this study is students’ difficulty in distinguishing and pronouncing certain English phonemes, particularly vowel sounds with similar articulatory features. This research employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test. The participants were junior high school students who received pronunciation instruction through the minimal pairs technique. The research instrument was a pronunciation test focusing on several phonemic contrasts, namely /e/–/æ/, /ɪ/–/iː/, and /ʊ/–/uː/. The data were analyzed by comparing the results of the pre-test and post-test. The findings revealed a significant improvement in students’ pronunciation ability after the treatment was implemented. Therefore, it can be concluded that the minimal pairs technique is effective in enhancing junior high school students’ pronunciation mastery. This technique is recommended for English pronunciation teaching as it helps students distinguish sounds more accurately and improves their overall pronunciation clarity.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui efektivitas penggunaan teknik minimal pairs dalam meningkatkan penguasaan pelafalan siswa sekolah menengah pertama. Penelitian ini dilakukan di SMPN 4 Kota Mojokerto dengan permasalahan utama dalam penelitian ini adalah rendahnya kemampuan siswa dalam membedakan dan mengucapkan fonem bahasa Inggris tertentu, khususnya fonem vokal yang memiliki kemiripan bunyi. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan desain quasi-experimental berupa pre-test and post-test. Subjek penelitian adalah siswa kelas SMP yang mengikuti pembelajaran pelafalan menggunakan teknik minimal pairs. Instrumen penelitian berupa tes pelafalan yang mencakup beberapa kontras fonem, yaitu /e/–/æ/, /ɪ/–/iː/, dan /ʊ/–/uː/. Data dianalisis dengan membandingkan hasil pre-test dan post-test. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya peningkatan yang signifikan pada kemampuan pelafalan siswa setelah diberikan perlakuan. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa teknik minimal pairs efektif dalam meningkatkan penguasaan pelafalan siswa SMP. Teknik ini direkomendasikan untuk digunakan dalam pembelajaran pelafalan bahasa Inggris karena dapat membantu siswa membedakan bunyi secara lebih akurat dan meningkatkan kejelasan pengucapan.

تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى معرفة فعالية استخدام تقنية الأزواج الدنيا في تحسين إتقان نطق طلاب المرحلة المتوسطة. أُجريت هذه الدراسة في المدرسة المتوسطة الحكومية ٤ بمدينة موجوكرتو، حيث تمثلت المشكلة الرئيسة في انخفاض قدرة الطلاب على التمييز ونطق بعض الفونيمات في اللغة الإنجليزية، خاصة الفونيمات الصوتية التي تتشابه في النطق. استخدمت الدراسة المنهج الكمي بتصميم تجريبي أولي من نوع اختبار قبلي وبعدي لمجموعة واحدة. تكونت عينة الدراسة من طلاب المرحلة المتوسطة الذين شاركوا في تعلم النطق باستخدام تقنية الأزواج الدنيا. استُخدم اختبار النطق أداةً لجمع البيانات، وشمل عدة تقابلات صوتية، وهي ‎/e/–/æ/‎، ‎/ɪ/–/iː/‎، و‎/ʊ/–/uː/‎. تم تحليل البيانات من خلال مقارنة نتائج الاختبار القبلي والبعدي. أظهرت النتائج وجود تحسن دال في قدرة الطلاب على النطق بعد تطبيق المعالجة. بناءً على ذلك، تُعد تقنية الأزواج الدنيا فعالة في تحسين إتقان نطق طلاب المرحلة المتوسطة. تُوصى هذه التقنية للاستخدام في تعليم نطق اللغة الإنجليزية، لأنها تساعد الطلاب على التمييز بين الأصوات بدقة أكبر وتحسين وضوح النطق.
