Abstract
INDONESIA:
ENGLISH:
The presence of a child with multiple disabilities in a family requires parents to undergo a psychologically complex and demanding journey. Children with multiple disabilities are those who simultaneously experience two or more types of disability, such as Down Syndrome accompanied by ADHD or physical impairment. This condition places parents at significant risk of experiencing anxiety, emotional exhaustion, guilt, and depression. In facing such pressures, self-acceptance becomes a crucial psychological foundation that determines the quality of caregiving. This study aims to gain an in-depth understanding of the process of parental self-acceptance in raising children with multiple disabilities by employing Carl Rogers' humanistic theoretical framework, particularly the concepts of congruence, conditions of worth, and unconditional positive regard (UPR).
This study employed a qualitative study case approach involving four participants from two families, each of whom had a child with Down Syndrome accompanied by ADHD. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using Rogers' theoretical framework. The findings revealed that parental self-acceptance unfolds through three successive phases. First, the incongruence phase, in which all participants experienced denial, guilt, and identity disruption arising from the gap between their ideal self (the expectation of having a typically developing child) and their real self (the reality of raising a child with special needs), further compounded by pressure from conditions of worth rooted in social constructions of ideal parenthood. Second, the self-concept reorganization phase, during which parents began making active adjustments by seeking information about their child's condition, engaging in therapeutic processes, and revising their expectations regarding the child's development. Third, the congruence phase, in which parents were able to accept themselves and their child's condition more fully and realistically, no longer trapped in patterns of denial or self-blame.
Four primary factors were identified as influencing the parental self-acceptance process. First, support from a spouse and extended family, who provided unconditional acceptance and ensured that parents did not feel alone in their struggle. Second, the child's developmental progress, which served as a source of hope and motivation, encouraging parents to shift their focus from limitations toward appreciation of the child's abilities. Third, spiritual beliefs, which helped parents assign meaningful significance to their difficult experiences and perceive them as part of a purposeful destiny. Fourth, social support from communities of parents with similar experiences, which fostered a sense of belonging and reduced feelings of isolation. This study concludes that parental self-acceptance in the context of raising children with multiple disabilities is a gradual, non-linear, and individually unique process. These findings are expected to serve as a reference for psychologists, counselors, and professionals in designing more empathic and humanistic psychosocial support programs for families of children with multiple disabilities.
