Abstract
ENGLISH:
In romantic contemporary capitalist society, romantic relationships are increasingly shaped by market logic, where love is treated as an investment, couples are valued based on exchange value, and intimacy is packaged as a commodity. This phenomenon is reflected in popular films that reproduce the ideology of capitalism through romantic discourse. This study examines the reproduction of the ideology of capitalism in the romantic discourse of the film Materialists (2025) by Celine Song with a focus on the representation of love as a commodity. Although the commodification of love in popular culture has been widely studied in digital media and advertising, research based on Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) on film as a cultural text is still limited. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the ideology of capitalism embedded in film discourse as well as identify the way in which love is represented as a
commodity. This study uses a qualitative descriptive (quasi) approach with Fairclough’s three-dimensional CDA framework which includes text analysis, discourse practice, and social practice. Data were obtained from 17 selected dialogues and stage directions in the film script which were analyzed using thematic techniques and contextualized through a semi-structured discourse with seven informants as a form of triangulation. The results of the study show three ideological patterns: the colonization of discourse through economic vocabulary, the historical naturalization of the commodification of marriage, and the internalization of ideology through the professional of identity of the main character. In addition, love in this film is represented through various forms of commodification that show the dominance of the logic of exchange in romantic relationships.

Dalam masyarakat kapitalis kontemporer, relasi romantis semakin dibentuk oleh logika pasar, di mana cinta diperlakukan sebagai investasi, pasangan dinilai berdasarkan nilai tukar, dan keintiman dikemas sebagai komoditas. Fenomena ini tercermin dalam film populer yang mereproduksi ideologi kapitalisme melalui wacana romantis. Penelitian ini mengkaji reproduksi ideologi kapitalisme dalam wacana romantis film Materialists (2025) karya
Celine Song dengan fokus pada representasi cinta sebagai komoditas. Meskipun komodifikasi cinta dalam budaya populer telah banyak dikaji pada media digital dan periklanan, namun penelitian berbasis Analisis Wacana Kritis (AWK) terhadap film sebagai teks budaya masih terbatas. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis ideologi kapitalisme yang tertanam dalam wacana film serta mengidentifikasi cara cinta direpresentasikan sebagai komoditas. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif
deskriptif (quasi) dengan kerangka AWK tiga dimensi Fairclough yang meliputi analisis teks,
praktik wacana, dan praktik sosial. Data diperoleh dari 17 dialog dan arahan panggung pilihan dalam skrip film yang dianalisis menggunakan teknik tematik dan dikontekstualisasikan melalui wacana semi-terstruktur dengan tujuh informan sebagai bentuk triangulasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan tiga pola ideologis: kolonisasi wacana melalui kosakata ekonomi, naturalisasi historis komodifikasi pernikahan, dan internalisasi ideologi melalui identitas professional karakter utama. Selain itu cinta dalam film ini direpresentasikan melalui berbagai bentuk komodifikasi yang memperlihatkan dominasi
logika pertukaran dalam hubungan romantis.
