Sets of objects as the objective correlative of unspoken inner grief in Emily Dickinson’s Three Poems

ABSTRACT

Sets of Objects as the Objective Correlative of Unspoken Inner Grief in Three Emily Dickinson’s Poems is a study that examines how unspoken inner grief is indirectly represented in literary works. This reseacrh analyzes three poems by Emily Dickinson —I Heard a Fly Buzz—When I Died, The Bustle in a House, and A Clock Stopped— which demonstrate various forms of inner grief representation through configurations of interconnected objects. This reseacrh falls under literary criticism and employs the Russian Formalism approach. The researcher utilizes T. S. Eliot’s central theory of the “objective correlative” to identify the forms of sets of objects and their functions in conveying emotion. This study aims to identify the forms of sets of objects in the three poems and analyze how the relationships between these objects convey inner grief. The research data consists of words, phrases, and lines of poetry containing object configurations that represent emotions. The method use literary criticism, analyzing the use of sets of objects found in the three poems. The results of the study reveal two main findings. First, there are eleven forms of sets of objects, including spatial objects, bodily responses, and domestic activities, which function as objective correlatives in representing inner grief. The sets of objects used are interconnected across stanzas to evoke emotional resonance. Second, the relationships between objects in each stanza form a progressive pattern, such as a shift from silence to disturbance, from control to loss. The sets of objects are analyzed in greater depth using T.S. Eliot’s theory to convey inner grief to the reader by linking the entire sets of objects used in each stanza of the poem, so that by the final stanza, a tangible emotional form is presented.

ABSTRAK

Sets of Objects as the Objective Correlative of Unspoken Inner Grief in Three Emily Dickinson’s Poems merupakan penelitian yang mengkaji bagaimana kesedihan batin (inner grief) yang tidak terucapkan direpresentasikan secara tidak langsung dalam karya sastra. Penelitian ini menganalisis tiga puisi Emily Dickinson, yaitu I Heard a Fly Buzz—When I Died, The Bustle in a House, dan A Clock Stopped, yang menunjukkan berbagai bentuk representasi kesedihan batin melalui konfigurasi objek yang saling berhubungan. Penelitian ini termasuk dalam kajian kritik sastra dengan menggunakan pendekatan Russian Formalism. Peneliti menggunakan teori utama objective correlative dari T. S. Eliot untuk mengidentifikasi bentuk sets of objects serta fungsinya dalam menyampaikan emosi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi bentuk-bentuk sets of objects dalam ketiga puisi serta menganalisis bagaimana hubungan antar-objek tersebut menyampaikan inner grief. Data penelitian berupa kata, frasa, dan baris puisi yang mengandung konfigurasi objek yang merepresentasikan emosi. Metode yang digunakan termasuk dalam literary criticms dengan menganalisis penggunaan sets of objects yang ditemukan dalam ketiga puisi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan dua temuan utama. Pertama, terdapat sebelas bentuk sets of objects yang meliputi objek ruang, respons tubuh, aktivitas domestik yang berfungsi sebagai objective correlatives dalam merepresentasikan kesedihan batin. Set of object yang digunakan memiliki keterkaitan antara bait satu ke bait yang lain. Kedua, hubungan antar-objek dalam setiap bait membentuk pola progresif, seperti pergeseran dari keheningan menuju gangguan, dari kontrol menuju kehilangan. Set of obects dianalsiis lebih dalam menggunakan T.S Eliot theory untuk menyampikan inner grief kepada pembaca dengan mengkaitan kan selurus rangkaian object yang digunakan disetiap bait puisi, hingga di bait terakhir memberikan bentuk emosi yang nyata.
