Anticipatory trauma in Adam Silvera’s They Both Die at the End: A trauma-theory reading

Penelitian ini menganalisis trauma antisipatif pada kedua tokoh utama dalam novel They Both Die at the End karya Adam Silvera dengan menggunakan pendekatan psikoanalisis dan teori trauma Dominick LaCapra Acting Out dan Working Through. Penelitian ini berfokus pada identifikasi trauma antisipatif pada tokoh Mateo Torrez dan Rufus Emeterio dan cara mereka menghadapi trauma yang mereka alami. Novel They Both Die at the End digunakan sebagai sumber data utama dengan kritik sastra sebagai desain penelitian. Data penelitian berupa kutipan, dialog, dan peristiwa yang dialami kedua tokoh utama dalam cerita. Peneliti menganalisis data dengan mengumpulkan beberapa kutipan dalam novel yang menunjukkan reaksi traumatis kedua tokoh utama dan mengklasifikasikan ke dalam teori trauma Dominick LaCapra, acting out dan working through. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan kedua karakter utama memiliki reaksi yang berbeda dalam menghadapi trauma mereka, seperti Mateo mencerminkan acting out dari dalam yang ditunjukkan dalam tindakan dia yang mengisolasi dirinya dalam apartemen untuk menghindari kematian, sementara Rufus mencerminkan acting out dari luar yang ditunjukkan melalui kekerasan yang dilakukan sebagai bentuk penolakan terhadap kejadian traumatis yang menimpanya. Seiring dengan berjalannya cerita, kedua tokoh utama mampu menerima trauma yang mereka alami melalui aksi dan perjalanan mereka, menunjukkan transformasi sifat mereka untuk menjadi pribadi yang lebih baik di saat sebelum mereka mengalami trauma antisipatif.

This research analyzes anticipatory trauma in the two main characters in the novel They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera using a psychoanalytic approach and Dominick LaCapra's trauma theory of Acting Out and Working Through. This study focuses on identifying anticipatory trauma in the characters Mateo Torrez and Rufus Emeterio and how they cope with the trauma they experience. The novel They Both Die at the End is used as the primary data source with literary criticism as the research design. The research data consist of quotations, dialogues, and events experienced by the two main characters in the story. The researcher analyzes the data by collecting several quotes from the novel that show the traumatic reactions of the two main characters and classifies them into Dominick LaCapra's trauma theory, acting out and working through. The research results show that the two main characters have different reactions to their trauma, such as Mateo reflecting internal acting out, demonstrated by his action of isolating himself in the apartment to avoid death. In contrast, Rufus reflects external acting out, shown through the violence he commits as a form of denial of the traumatic event that befell him. As the story progresses, both main characters come to accept the trauma they experienced through their actions and journeys, demonstrating a transformation into better individuals than before they experienced anticipatory trauma.

تحلل هذه الدراسة الصدمة التوقعية في الشخصيتين الرئيسيتين في رواية "كلاهما يموت في النهاية" لأدام سيلفيرا باستخدام نهج نفسي تحليلي ونظرية الصدمة لدومينيك لاكابرا حول التصرف والتعامل. تركز هذه الدراسة على تحديد الصدمة التوقعية في الشخصيتين ماتيو توريس وروفوس إيميتيريو وكيفية تعاملهم مع الصدمة التي يواجهونها. يتم استخدام رواية "كلاهما يموت في النهاية" كمصدر البيانات الرئيسي مع النقد الأدبي كتصميم البحث. تتكون بيانات البحث من اقتباسات وحوارات وأحداث عاشها الشخصيتان الرئيسيتان في القصة. يقوم الباحث بتحليل البيانات من خلال جمع عدة اقتباسات من الرواية التي تظهر ردود الفعل الصادمة للشخصيتين الرئيسيتين وتصنيفها وفقًا لنظرية الصدمة لدومينيك لاكابرا، التصرف الخارجي والمعالجة. تظهر نتائج البحث أن الشخصيتين الرئيسيتين لديهما ردود فعل مختلفة في مواجهة صدمتهما، مثل ماتييو الذي يعكس التصرف الداخلي، والذي يتجلى في عزله نفسه في الشقة لتجنب الموت، بينما يعكس روفوس التصرف الخارجي، الذي يظهر من خلال العنف الذي يرتكبه كنوع من الإنكار للحدث الصادم الذي تعرض له. مع تقدم القصة، يتمكن كلا الشخصيتين الرئيسيتين من قبول الصدمة التي تعرضا لها من خلال أفعالهما ورحلاتهما، مما يظهر تحولًا في شخصيتهما ليصبحا أفرادًا أفضل قبل أن يتعرضا للصدمة التوقعية.
