“Trauma experienced by main characters in short stories by Tim O’Brien”

ABSTRACT

Trauma is a psychological experience that is not fully understood when a traumatic event occurs. In war literature, trauma is often represented indirectly through recurring memories, silence, emotional conflict, and psychological instability. This study analyses the trauma experienced by the main characters in Tim O’Brien’s short stories On the Rainy River, The Things They Carried, and Speaking of Courage using Cathy Caruth’s trauma theory and Dominick LaCapra’s concepts of acting out and working through. The study aims to identify the characteristics of trauma and examine how the characters deal with the trauma. The data consist of sentences, dialogues, and narratives that represent the characters' traumatic experiences in the selected short stories. The characteristics of trauma include unclaimed experience, belatedness, repetition, inaccessibility of experience, and latency, although they appear differently in each story: in On the Rainy River, trauma appears through unclaimed experience, repetition, and inaccessibility of experience, while belatedness and latency are not clearly found; The Things They Carried all characteristics are present in Lieutenant Jimmy Cross’s experience; in Speaking of Courage, Norman Bowker experiences unclaimed experience, repetition, and inaccessibility of experience, while latency is not clearly represented. In addition, the findings indicate that acting out is more dominant than working through, as Tim O’Brien and Lieutenant Jimmy Cross show partial working through, whereas Norman Bowker remains trapped in acting out.
