Abstract
INDONESIA:
ENGLILSH:
Background: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common health problem among women, particularly under conditions that promote bacterial colonization, such as during the Hajj pilgrimage. High activity levels, hot weather, and limited access to clean water may compromise personal hygiene and increase infection risk. Dipstick urinalysis is a rapid and efficient screening method to detect UTI through leukocyte and nitrite parameters. Objective: To describe the profile of UTI based on dipstick urinalysis results and assess personal hygiene practices among reproductive-aged female pilgrims at the Surabaya Hajj Embarkation. Methods: This descriptive quantitative study used a cross-sectional design involving 159 reproductive-aged female pilgrims selected by consecutive sampling. Data were obtained through a five-item personal hygiene questionnaire and dipstick urinalysis, then analyzed descriptively as frequency and percentage distributions. Results: Leukocyte positivity was found in 63.5% of respondents, and nitrite positivity in 2.5%, with four showing both positive. The 36–45-year age group had the highest proportion of UTI suspects (39.6%). While most respondents practiced good personal hygiene, suboptimal behaviors—such as infrequent changing of undergarments after perspiration and inadequate genital drying after urination—were still noted. Conclusion: UTI remains prevalent among reproductive-aged female pilgrims. Improving personal hygiene practices may reduce UTI risk. Dipstick urinalysis serves as a rapid, non-invasive, and practical preliminary screening tool before pilgrimage departure.
