Abstract

ABSTRACT:

The Indonesian film industry has undergone significant development over nearly a century. In recent years, its growth trend has shown a positive trajectory. According to a report by LPEM FEB UI, the industry is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.13% during the 2023–2027 period. In 2020, the Head of the Indonesian Film Board (BPI) also emphasized that appreciation and preservation are crucial elements directly related to the overall growth of the industry. However, until now, there has been no representative facility that serves as a platform for appreciation, preservation, and education regarding the history of national cinema. The only existing archival facility, Sinematek Indonesia, is in inadequate condition and has yet to reach a broad audience. Based on these issues, this final project proposes the design of the National Film Museum of Indonesia as a public space that represents the historical journey of Indonesian cinema while fulfilling the need for education, preservation, and appreciation. A narrative architectural approach is employed using the intangible metaphor and spatial sequence method by Bica Adrian, which is based on the six phases of Indonesian film development as described by Garin Nugroho in his book Kritik dan Paradoks Perfilman Indonesia. The design method includes literature studies, field observations, and precedent studies of international film museums. The final design presents a symbolic and iconic architectural form, along with thematic spaces that not only deliver a chronological narrative of history but also evoke emotional engagement from visitors through the exploration of elements such as lighting, materials, and spatial circulation. The museum is expected to become both a cultural landmark and a center for education and preservation of national cinema.
