The analysis of pastiche in the sword of summer novel by Rick Riordan

ABSTRACT

Literary works in the fantasy genre often contain elements of mythology, such as in the novel The Sword of Summer, as a way to attract readers' attention. The aims of this research are: 1. Describe the forms of pastiche in the novel. 2. Describe the use of mythological elements in creating pastiche forms in the novel. This research uses the concepts of pastiche and defamiliarization as analytical tools to examine pastiche forms and the use of mythological elements in the novel The Sword of Summer. This research method uses qualitative methods. The data source was taken from the novel The Sword of Summer (2015) by Rick Riordan. Data collection techniques were carried out through literature studies related to pastiche and other sources that support the understanding of Shklovsky's defamiliarization in the novel. Data collection techniques were carried out in three ways, namely by using in-depth reading techniques, underlining the focus of the data, and recording data from the novel. The results obtained from this research: 1) The pastiche forms consist of the characters Magnus Chase and Samirah Al-Abbas; 2) The use of Norse mythology elements such as the Sumarbrander sword, the Surt character, and Hotel Valhalla in creating a pastiche concept. This research concludes that the use of pastiche writing techniques in the novel The Sword of Summer can not only attract the reader's attention, but can also cause a defamiliarization effect.

غالبًا ما تحتوي الأعمال الأدبية من النوع الخيالي على عناصر من الأساطير، كما هو الحال في رواية سيف الصيف، كوسيلة لجذب انتباه القراء. أما أهداف هذا البحث فهي: 1. وصف أشكال المزج في الرواية. 2. وصف استخدام العناصر الأسطورية في خلق أشكال التقليد في الرواية. يستخدم هذا البحث مفهومي التقليد والتغريب كأدوات تحليلية لفحص أشكال التقليد واستخدام العناصر الأسطورية في رواية سيف الصيف. تستخدم طريقة البحث هذه الأساليب النوعية. مصدر البيانات مأخوذ من رواية سيف الصيف (2015) للكاتب ريك ريوردان. تم تنفيذ تقنيات جمع البيانات من خلال الدراسات الأدبية المتعلقة بالتقليد والمصادر الأخرى التي تدعم فهم التغريب الذي قام به شكلوفسكي في الرواية. تم تنفيذ تقنيات جمع البيانات بثلاث طرق، وهي استخدام تقنيات القراءة المتعمقة، والتأكيد على تركيز البيانات، وتسجيل البيانات من الرواية. النتائج التي تم الحصول عليها من هذا البحث: 1) تكون أشكال التقليد من شخصيتي ماجنوس تشيس وسميرة العباس؛ 2) استخدام عناصر الأساطير الإسكندنافية مثل سيف سوماربراندر وشخصية سورت وفندق فالهالا في خلق مفهوم التقليد. يخلص هذا البحث إلى أن استخدام تقنيات الكتابة المقلدة في رواية سيف الصيف لا يمكن أن يجذب انتباه القارئ فحسب، بل يمكن أن يسبب أيضًا تأثيرًا غير مألوف.

ABSTRAK

Karya sastra dengan genre fantasi kerap kali membawa unsur mitologi seperti pada novel The Sword of Summer sebagai salah satu cara untuk menarik perhatian pembaca. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah: 1. Mendeskripsikan bentuk-bentuk pastiche dalam novel. 2. Mendeskripsikan penggunaan elemen-elemen mitologi dalam menciptakan bentuk pastiche dalam novel. Penelitian ini menggunakan konsep pastiche dan defamiliarisasi sebagai alat analisis untuk mengkaji bentuk-bentuk pastiche dan penggunaan elemen-elemen mitologi dalam novel The Sword of Summer. Metode penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif. Sumber data diambil dari novel The Sword of Summer (2015) karya Rick Riordan. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui studi pustaka yang berkaitan dengan pastiche dan sumber-sumber lain yang mendukung pemahaman defamiliarisasi Shklovsky dalam novel. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan tiga cara, yaitu dengan menggunakan teknik baca mendalam, menggarisbawahi fokus data, dan mencatat data dari novel. Hasil yang diperoleh dari penelitian ini: 1) Bentuk-bentuk pastiche terdiri dari karakter Magnus Chase dan Samirah Al-Abbas; 2) Penggunaan elemen-elemen mitologi nordik seperti pedang Sumarbrander, karakter Surt, dan hotel valhalla dalam menciptakan konsep pastiche. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa penggunaan teknik penulisan pastiche dalam novel The Sword of Summer selain dapat menarika perhatian pembaca, tetapi juga dapat menimbulkan efek defamiliarisasi.
