Unveiling rudeness: Impoliteness strategies used by the judges of America's Got Talent 2023

ABSTRACT

Technological advancement and increasing cultural diversity lead to misunderstandings in communication. Therefore, individuals need to understand impoliteness strategies to prevent misunderstandings and by understanding impoliteness strategies to increase success in communication. This phenomenon is reflected in the American talent show, which illustrates how the judges' utterances are acts of impoliteness. This study examines the types of impoliteness strategies contained in the judges' utterances on America's Got Talent in 2023. In this study, the theory used is the theory of impoliteness strategies from Culpeper (1996) in which he divides impoliteness strategies into five types. These types are Bald-On Record Impoliteness, Positive Impoliteness, Negative Impoliteness, Sarcasm/Mock Politeness, and Withhold Politeness. This research refers to the first problem formulation, namely what types of impoliteness strategies are used by the judges in the talent show America's Got Talent. In addition, the researcher also analyzes the function of impoliteness according to Culpeper's theory (2011) which refers to the second problem formulation related to what is the function of impoliteness used by the judges in America's Got Talent. The function of impoliteness according to Culpeper (2011) is divided into 3 namely; affective function, coercive function, and entertaining function. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method that aims to analyze examples of impoliteness strategies used in the judges' utterances. In this study, researchers found all types of impoliteness strategies by Culpeper's theory other than the Withhold politeness type. In addition, the researcher also found all the functions of impoliteness used by the judges on America's Got Talent.

Kemajuan teknologi serta meningkatnya keragaman budaya menyebabkan adanya kesalahpahaman dalam komunikasi. Oleh karena itu, individu perlu memahami strategi ketidaksopanan guna mencegah adanya kesalahpahaman serta dengan memahami strategi ketidasopanan untuk meningkatkan keberhasilan dalam berkomunikasi. Fenomena ini tercermin dalam acara bakat yang terjadi di Amerika, America’s Got Talent yang menggambarkan bagaimana ujaran juri merupakan tindak ketidaksopanan. Penelitian ini meneliti tentang tipe dari strategi ketidaksopanan yang terdapat dalam ujaran juri pada acara America’s Got Talent tahun 2023. Dalam penelitian ini teori yang digunakan adalah teori strategi ketidaksopanan dari Culpeper (1996) yang mana dia membagi strategi ketidaksopanan dalam lima tipe. Tipe tersebut adalah Bald-On Record Impoliteness, Positive Impoliteness, Negative Impoliteness, Sarcasm/Mock Politeness, dan Withhold Politeness. Penelitian ini mengacu pada rumusan masalah yang pertama yaitu apa tipe strategi ketidaksopanan yang digunakan oleh para juri dalam acara bakat America’s Got Talent. Selain itu, peneliti juga menganalisis fungsi dari ketidaksopanan menurut teori Culpeper (2011) yang mana hal ini mengacu pada rumusan masalah yang kedua terkait apa fungsi ketidaksopanan yang digunakan oleh juri dalam acara America’s Got Talent. Fungsi dari ketidaksopanan menurut Culpeper (2011) terbagi menjadi 3 yaitu; fungsi afektif, fungsi coercive, dan fungsi entertaining. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif yang bertujuan untuk menganalisis contoh strategi ketidaksopanan yang digunakan dalam ujaran juri. Pada penelitian ini peneliti menemukan semua tipe strategi ketidaksopanan sesuai dengan teori dari Culpeper selain tipe Withhold politeness. Selain itu, peneliti juga menemukan semua fungsi dari ketidaksopanan yang digunakan oleh juri di acara America’s Got Talent.
