Abstract
ABSTRACT
Literature is a creative and imaginative work of art which can be used to express many aspects of life such as people's emotions, ideas, feelings, thoughts, and expressions. The aim of literature is to entertain and give pleasure to people. In any literary work, like novels, poetry, lyrics, and drama, we find figurative language. The existence of figurative language cannot be denied and avoided.
As a variant of literature, lyrics of the song usually contain figurative language in order to enlarge the meaning of certain words. Sometimes, one cannot understand it by only reading at a glance but we have to carefully hear to understand and to comprehend the lyrics of a song, which contain figurative language. Moreover, a song has more artistic value because the composer usually uses figurative language to convey his idea. Consequently, the usage of figurative language always exists in a song to show the way the composer expresses his emotions and feelings through the lyrics. The figurative language is also found in the lyrics of Iwan Fals' songs.
Most of his songs criticize the government. The lyrics of Iwan Fals' songs describe his view and directly express his feelings about phenomena in society. He also tries to express to the listeners what he wants. Thus, investigating the figurative language of the selected lyrics from the album entitled *Best of the Best Iwan Fals* is interesting to do.
The researcher has some steps to analyze the data: (1) to categorize each song which contains figurative language related to research problems, (2) to describe the figurative languages found in each song, (3) to discuss the findings, and finally (4) to make some conclusions.
The results of this study show that there are several figurative language expressions used. Hyperbole and irony are more dominant than others. Hyperboles are used in his songs to make them more artistic. Besides that, irony is also dominant in this album because most Iwan Fals’ songs contain criticism for the government.
Based on these findings, readers or other researchers who want to make further research are suggested to analyze the lyrics of Iwan Fals’ songs from semantic, social, and psychological aspects.
