Abstract
ABSTRACT
In society, multiple languages are in use, reflecting the fact that language is inherently linked to social contexts, with each society having its own linguistic characteristics. People express their ideas and feelings through language, which can be conveyed via songs, poems, and poetry. One dimension of language variation is code-switching.
Code refers to a system of rules and principles, and a situational change in the value of a variable defining a domain may result in code-switching. Code choice is particularly significant for Madurese traders in their daily transactions, as it contributes to the fluency and success of interactions. The choice of code can impact the effectiveness of transactions and fulfill social needs between sellers and buyers.
This study investigates the types of codes used by Madurese traders and how these traders employ code-switching. The objectives are to identify the kinds of codes used and to understand the application of code choice in trading contexts. The significance of this study lies in its potential to benefit other researchers and students interested in this field. The scope is focused on code choice phenomena in Gondanglegi, Malang, specifically observing transactions among Madurese traders. The research examines code choice patterns and their usage, particularly in offering products to buyers.
The findings reveal various types of code choice and the factors influencing them. The researcher acknowledges that this study is not perfect and welcomes suggestions, criticisms, and comments from readers
