Abstract
Language is one of the most important means in human life. Language is a tool to communicate with others. Without language it seems impossible for people to communicate with others. Everyone cannot deny that they need language to realize their thinking.
Javanese is one of regional languages in Indonesia, and has the greatest number of speakers. Javanese is divided into two variations. Those are “Jawa Wetan” (Eastern Javanese) and “Jawa Kulon” (Western Javanese). ،،Jawa Wetan” is Javanese used by almost Javanese who live in East Java, and “Jawa Kulon” is Javanese used by almost Javanese who live in Central Java.
Javanese is usually used as a language in daily conversation, and this local language is widely spoken throughout Indonesia. Because of this, Javanese become a dominant language.
With reference to its position, the writer thinks it necessary to make a study of this regional language. The writer intends to explain these term with some reasons. First, she is a native speaker of Lamongan and she wants to lift her language up by studying its terms of address. Second, Lamongan has many terms of address which for the greater part is different from those in another dialect in Java. Therefore, in this thesis she has decided to choose the topic of the study entitled “JAVANESE TERMS OF ADDRESS USED IN LAMONGAN DIALECT”.
The problems discussed in this study are: what terms of address used in Lamongan dialect. What are the functions and the meanings of those terms of address. And in what situation are those terms used. The objective of this study is to answer the problems of the study clearly by describing the kinds of terms of address used in Lamongan, and pronouns. To discuss the functions and meanings of those terms.
The writer hopes that the result of the study could be used as reference and guidance for those who are interested in Javanese, and this thesis would stimulate other student to conduct studies on topic applied to other languages.
This study is a descriptive-qualitative research, because this study will be an analysis of the data, which are the description of phenomena. The subject of this study are people who live in Lamongan. The instruments of this study are observations, interviews, and personal notes. The analysis is done through these ways: collecting the data in which address terms are used in Lamongan. Grouping them into first personal pronouns, second personal pronouns. Family terms, term referring to oneself and name of person. After that, she analyzed them based on sociolinguistics theory by Trudgjll which include: The usage and the users, meanings, social status of the users and the situation where and when the terms are used.
Based on the data that had been analyzed, the writer can conclude that there are many types of terms of address in Lamongan. Those are: First personal pronouns: aku and kulo. Second personal pronouns: kowe. sampeyan, and panjenengan. Family terms: bapak, ibu, emak, mbok, pak’e, pakdhe, budhe, mbokdhe. paklik, bulik, mas, mbak١ yu١ gus. kak, adhik, cung٩ ndhuk, bibik, mbah, mbokwo, pakwo, nyai, and buyut.
The researcher confesses that this study is still limited, only terms of address study. So, the researcher suggests other researchers to continue doing such a study on to aspect of Javanese language.
