A study of play of words and slangs on The ABG Problem Section in Jawa Pos Daily Newspaper

ABSTRACT

Language is everywhere. It permeates our thought, mediates our relation with others, and even creeps into our dreams. Language and Society, Society is a group of people who live together for certain purposes. All involve in purposes and mediated by language.

Interesting problems are grabbed. Those are what is play of words that is shown in correspondent’s word choice and why slang is used in correspondent’s word choice on “The ABG Problem” Section at Jawa Pos daily newspaper.

The objectives of grabbed-problem are describing creative manipulation of words - the reconstruction of the reality which is taken after an action - and describing informal language used by certain group of people. Furthermore, Style choice at the last is ended in the sociolingnistical view; who is speak, to whom, about what, when and why. This is the limitation of the study done during the period of the investigation. After style actually refers to the selection of linguistic form to convey social or artistic effects.

The researcher in collecting the data and to make his works easier and also make the result is better needs a helping hand. It is the writer his self since human being is a main instrument of analyzing the data in this descriptive research. Finally, the data is gathered. In analyzing the data the writer allow Lauren Kessler and Duncan McDonald’s theory. The formula is creative manipulation of words or startling turn of a phrase to the writing.

The results of the whole study are; Plays of words that are shown in “The ABG Problem” section are kinds of creative manipulation of words or startling turn of a phrase. That is done to add zest or originality to the writing. Secondly, slang is used because the situation that is inter-change from formal into informal and its opposite. Another reason is because in presenting their subjective foundation, the scientific experts especially “The ABG Problem” director sometime changes the discussion to make the situation dynamic and fresh, also invite readers attention to be more closer. Another reason why it is used is avoiding monotonously. Also in the presenting their subjective foundation, “The ABG Problem” director wants to be closer to the readers since this program is actually for young people and this is the last one.
