Abstract
ABSTRACT
Literature is an imaginative writing which can be used to express many aspect of life as emotion, idea؛ feeling and experience. The basic aim of literature is to give pleasure, enjoyment and close relation toward life. In this study, it will be focused on one-literature a branch that is poetry. Poetry it self also has certain characteristic, they are symbol, allusion, devices and figurative language.
There are some reasons which provide the basic for the writer in choosing this topic. By reading to the poem, we may acquire knowledge about how to appreciate literature and know the background of the poems. Therefore, she was interested in analyzing the figurative language used in Robert Browning poems, since she knows there are many figurative language, that are used in Robert Browning’s poems. The writer decide to give the title of her thesis ،،An Analysis on Figurative Language Used in Robert Browning’s Poems”. The problem of the study is what kinds of figurative language are used in Robert Browning’s poems? And how are the kinds of figurative language used in Robert Browning’s poems?.
The purposes of study are to acquire the answer to the questions intended in this study and gain better understanding on the content of the poems. The scope in this study is limited on six poems, they are: Meeting at Night, Parting at Morning, A Woman’s Last Word, Prophyria’s Lover, Love in Life and My Star, the poems written by Robert Browning.
In the second chapter the writer explains about teories that are related to the problem of the study, the writer used some book to analyze the study.
In third chapter, the writer explains about methodology of the study. The step how she obtained and collected all data to be observed by reading and understanding poem written by Robert Browning, selecting the data that are related with the purpose of study and arranging the data systematically in accordance with the problem of the study, making record the data obtained from the data source and arranging the data in accordance with the problem of he study. To corroborate the data, triangulation is used in this study, the writer decide to use triangulation of data sources and methodological triangulation. After the data had been collected, they are analyzed in the following step1١ :؟ Adj listing the data related with the purpose of study, 2) Presenting the data after they have been adjusted, 3) Analyzing the data based on the purpose of the study, 4) Discussing the whole data obtained from the data sources, 5) Arranging the data in accordance with the problem of the study
In the four chapter, the writer present the data obtained from the data sources، The data presentation is divide into six divisions as the following، Meeting at Night. Parting at Morning. A Woman’s Last Word, Porphyria’s Lover, Love in Life and My Star،
In the last chapter the writer makes conclusion and lesson as follow, the figurative language in the poem of Robert Browning more than one figurative language. The figurative language which are mostly appear in Robert Browning’s poem are hyperbole, personification and simile. Robert Browning often used romantic figurative language, to expressing his love, and he is more active, sweet, exciting experience and strongly to express his love. Finally, the writer got lesson from his poem that love, come from the deep heart as a divine gift of grice for each human being, so it is so pure and beautiful and love needs sacrifice. And the power of love, however, can combine the two persons. Although they are separated by the long distance it can prohibit them to become together.
