Abstract
ABSTRACT
The phenomena of language use in sociolinguistics are interesting to be investigated. In the society, language used by the people to communicate with others, also used to express their ideas and feeling besides maintaining social relation and personal attitudes. Language can be used to send an unlimited number of messages including giving response. Giving response one of stimulate friction on communicational between the speakers.
Furthermore, the people who express or responds to the interlocutor will be influenced by many factors. They are, because of different on the culture, social, ethnic and language. This study was focused on the students interlocutor responses at UIIS Malang on Javanese languages in particularly the eight semester.
Based on the background of the study, the research problems are stated in the following question : (I) what are the students interlocutor responses at UIIS Malang on Javanese languages,(2) what are the meaning of the students interlocutor response The research method of this study is descriptive qualitative since the data were in the form of utterances that is analyzed descriptively. The subjects are the students of English Department at UIIS Malang in particularly eight semester. Many types of interlocutor’s responses were uttered by those students and found by the writer during the investigation on April 28th to June 15 th 2003. To obtain the data, the researcher spent a great deal of time observing, taking note, interviewing. Furthermore, to define the valid data, the researcher used triangulation data. Then, the collected data were analyzed based on the research problems using the theory of interlocutor’s responses.
After analyzing and discussing the data, the researcher found the result as follows : (1) the students’ interlocutor responses are, repetition, guessing for determination, clarification request, laughing, non-verbal expressing responses. (2) the meaning of these responses are repetition is the native asks what the meaning that word, guessing for determination is offering the synonym word, clarification request is demands the interlocutor to explain the meaning that word, laughing is that word is still unique and strange, non-verbal expression is the native asks to explain that word meaning.
Finally, the phenomena of language in society are worth and valuable to be investigated. In the heterogeneous society of urban community, particularly in UIIS Malang, sometime the students have trouble in the communication between them, it is caused of the different of culture, social, dialect of languages.
