Abstract
ABSTRACT
People as creative creature; never stop creating something new in their life. It is because they have emotion and feeling and also thought that distinguish them from another creature in the world. One of their creations is literature. It is one way to express their emotion and feeling in a form of words or language. By reading novel, one of literary works, people can enrich their emotion and their knowledge. Furthermore, it also can enrich their experience and some aspects of life.
This study focuses on psychological aspects of Siti Nurbaya they are: (1) psychological conflicts faced by the main characters, (2) the main characters solution to solve psychological conflicts they faced, (3) the lessons that can be taken from the solution on the psychological conflicts faced by the main characters.
In this study, the writer uses qualitative descriptive method as research design. As in general there are two kinds of research design, qualitative and quantitative. She uses qualitative because in this study she relies on narrative description and describes situation or event. However, she uses it in literal research that accumulates the data based on solely descriptive. And the data collection procedures are: (1) reading and understanding the novel Siti Nurbaya, (2) choosing the data dealing with the problems of the study ١(3) choosing the data dealing with the purposes of the study, and (4) conducting survey toward paragraph in the dialogues in the novel.
As the result, this study shows that the novel Siti Nurbaya contains several psychological conflicts faced by the main characters. They are. Siti Nurbaya avoidance-avoidance, Samsul Bahri avoidance-avoidance, and Datuk Meringgih avoid ance¬avoidance conflicts. So, all of the types of conflict they faced are avoidance-avoidance. And the lessons that can be taken from this novel are love does not cost a thing, the sacrifice of a daughter to her father, true love will always exists althought frustrated by traditional society, a profiteer always give promises in the beginning, and think first before deciding to do something.
Finally, in this study the writer concludes that the kinds of conflicts faced by the main characters are not different; avoidance-avoidance conflicts. And there are some lessons that can be taken from the solution of facing the conflicts in Marah Rusli’s Siti Nurbaya.
