A study of cepu dialect used by Cepunese in Malang

ABSTRACT

Javanese is a regional language that is used by almost all Javanese who live in Central Java and East Java. Dialect is a form of language; grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation used by a part of country or by a class of people. Cepunese dialect is a dialect that is used by Cepunese. In relation to the phenomena about Cepunese dialect in Malang, the writer is interested to study on that. There are some Cepunese who want to preserve their dialect in Malang although they have lived in Malang for more than a year. It is the reason why the researcher investigates this topic.

In this study two research problems are formulated; how do Cepunese use their dialect in Malang? And why do Cepunese use their dialect in Malan».;?. The study was conducted to know the real use of Cepunese dialect by Cepunese and the reasons why Cepunese use their dialect in Malang.

Some theories, which have relationship with the problems are used as the foundation of the analyses. The theories are theory of language, variety of language, Javanese, speech community, the definition of dialect, types of dialect, the preserve of language, and previous studies.

To collect the data, the writer did interview and observation. After collecting the data, the writer analyzed the data and classified the data based on the problems which were related with the proposes of the study.

The complete data were analyzed based on the research problems. The findings are 1). The Cepunese use their dialect in Malang proudly, Cepunese use their dialect in Malang anywhere and anytime, and Cepunese also use their dialect in Malang everyday. 2). The reasons why Cepunese use their dialect in Malang are; 1) 'They want to preserve the purity of their dialect, 2) They want to preserve their ancestor’s culture, 3) ,They are proud to be Cepunese, 4) They believe that without introducing themselves to others and mentioning where they come from they will be recognized, and 5) They are FORMAC’S members.

Finally, after discussing all of the problems of the study, the writer proposed some suggestions dealing with the preservation of regional dialect and other further researchers to investigate other topics dealing with regional dialects.
