The language styles used by military members of Kompi Panser 31 Sidoarjo

ABSTRACT

This research intends to study more deeply about the language styles used by Military Members of Kompi Panser 31 Sidoarjo. As a matter of fact, the Military Members of Kompi Panser 31 Sidoarjo use their language styles in their duty. Because of this, the researcher has two questions: 1. What are classifications the language styles used by Military Members of Kompi Panser 31 Sidoarjo? 2. What are the functions the language styles used by Military Members of Kompi Panser 31 Sidoarjo?

To get the valid data, the researcher used some instruments to take the data. There are two instruments that researcher used; observation and interview, accompanied by field note and tape recorder; After, getting the data, the next step that is done by researcher is selecting and classifying the data to avoid irrelevant data. Then, the researcher describes the data by using descriptive qualitative method. In interview, researcher interviewed the military members of Kompi Panser 31 Sidoarjo to know the functions of language.

The findings of the research show that there are three kinds of language styles used by military members of Kompi,.Panser 31• Sidoarjo, those are I). Formal style is used in serious sentence. This language is suitable with the rule of norms used by Military. 2). Informal style is less serious to make a relaxed situation and condition. 3). Colloquial style is not too serious. The functions of'l'anguage styles are 1). Informative. 2). Persuasive. It is aimed to avoid misinterpretation on the messages.

Finally, after finishing this thesis, the researcher wishes the readers to know and understand more detail about the language styles used by، Military Members of Kompi Panser 31 Sidoarjo. And the researcher hopes to the next researcher or the ones who are interested in analyzing the similar topic to be able to develop this study by using different points of view. Such as; speech acts and figurative language.
