An analysis of figurative language on the lyrics of Sheila On 7s Songs

ABSTRACT

Literature is a creative and an imaginative writing to express many aspects of life such as ideas, expressions and emotions. Giving an enjoyment and bringing a relation closer toward life are the basic aims of literature.
One of the most popular group singers in Indonesia is Sheila On 7. The members of Sheila On 7 create all the lyrics and most of them are created by Erros. Their special characteristics are that their songs can influence their fans and this lyric of their songs come from the honesty that can touch the life of their fans.
There are some reasons that make the writer chooses this topic. By listening to the song, the writer acquires knowledge about how to appreciate literature and the background of poems. Therefore, she is interested in analyzing the figurative language and the theme in Sheila On 7’s songs. The writer decided to give the title of her thesis “An analyzing of Figurative Language on the Lyrics of Sheila On 7’s Songs”. The problems of the study are: what are the kinds of figurative language found in Sheila On 7’s songs? What is the dominant figurative language found in Sheila On 7’s songs? And what are the themes involved in the lyric of Sheila On 7’s songs? The writer limits the discussion of her thesis based on the figurative language found in Sheila On 7١s songs, the dominant figurative language in each song, and the theme in each lyric of song. Out of Sheila On 7’s albums, she only takes fourteen songs from them.
A descriptive qualitative method is used in this study, because she would like to analyze and interpret the research object of pop-rock songs. ٦٦he step how she obtains and collects االمم the data to be observed by looking for and taking from the Sheila On 7’s songs containing figurative language, selecting fourteen songs, making a record from sources ol data and arranging the data in accordance with the research questions. To corroborate the data, triangulation used in this study. The ١vriter decided to use triangulation of data sources and methodological triangulation. After the data have been collected, they are analyzed by using snowballing technique the following step; categories accordance with the number of the songs analyzed, presenting, analyzing, and concluding the data of each category. Then, the data of each category are presented, analyzed, and concluded. In addition, tentative conclusion is made.
From the data analysis above, it is shown that in every lyric of Sheila On T songs, the poet uses several kinds of figurative language expressions such as repetition, hyperbole, metaphor, personification, simile, allegory and antithesis. From those expressions, the most dominant one is repetition, because it appears more frequently than others. Also, the composer uses more concrete words than abstract words and makes the readers and listeners more enjoy it. Furthermore, the songs have several kinds of theme.
It is suggested that the readers or other researchers, who want to know more about this problem, conduct a further research with better and more complete data and discussions.
