Abstract
ABSTRAK:
Schiff bases are compounds formed when primary amines react with aldehydes or ketones under specific conditions. Schiff base compounds have a characteristic C=N (imine) group. This study aims to determine the results of the synthesis of the Schiff base compound using the grinding method and the toxicity value of the Schiff base compound synthesized from o-vanillin and 2- aminobenzothiazole.
The method used in synthesizing Schiff base compounds from o-vanillin and 2-aminobenzothiazole compounds is using the grinding method with a time of 7 hours. Schiff base compound products were characterized using FTIR (Fourier Transform Infra Red) spectrophotometer and GC-MS (Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. The toxicity test of Schiff's base compound was carried out using the BSLT (Brine Shrimp Lethality Test) method. The LC50 value was used as a parameter for the toxic level of the Schiff base compound synthesized from o-vanillin and 2-aminobenzothiazole.
The resulting product is a greenish yellow solid, has a melting point between 165.6-166.6℃, insoluble in water and completely soluble in 2M NaOH solution. The FTIR spectra results show a typical absorption of the imine group (-HC=N-) with a wave number of 1595 cm-1. The GC-MS results showed a peak at a retention time of 44.539 minutes with a purity of 98.54% and a molecular ion m/z of 284, corresponding to the molecular weight of the Schiff base compound 6-methoxy-2-((benzothiazol-2-ilimino)methyl)phenol. Toxicity testing using the BSLT method on the Schiff base compound 6-methoxy-2-((benzothiazol-2-ilimino)methyl)phenol showed an LC50 value of 13.7021 ppm.
