Abstract
ABSTRAK
Plastisitas lempung sangat berpengaruh dalam pembuatan keramik dengan metode badan plastis, supaya tidak timbul keretakan, cacat, atau perubahan bentuk ketika proses pembuatan keramik. Plastisitas terutama disebabkan adanya lapisan air yang mengelilingi butiran silika. Keberadaan abu layang yang melimpah sangat merugikan karena mengandung berbagai logam berat, namun abu layang memiliki kandungan silika sebagai salah satu komponen mayor, sehingga dimungkinkan dapat digunakan sebagai zat imbuh dalam pembuatan keramik. Salah satu jenis keramik tradisional adalah gerabah.
Penelitian ini mengkaji tentang pengaruh penambahan abu layang terhadap indeks plastisitas (PI) lempung untuk pembuatan gerabah, kemudian memperbandingkannya dengan plastisitas campuran lempung-CMC dan lempung- gliserol. Metode pengukuran indeks plastisitas adalah metode Atterberg, sedangkan karakterisasi menggunakan SEM, Mikroskop Optik, XRD dan XRF.
Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa lempung memiliki PI 27,22. Penambahan CMC meningkatkan PI, sedangkan penambahan gliserol menurunkan PI. Penambahan abu layang sebanyak 2 %, 4 %, 6 %, 8 %, 10 %, 12 %, 14 % dan 16 % menurunkan PI, dengan masing-masing bernilai 27,32; 26,08; 23,34; 25,30; 22,17; 23,97; 22,56; dan 20,74. Partikel lempung berupa lempengan berukuran 1 µm – 6 µm dan distribusi pori yang longgar, sedangkan distribusi partikel semua campuran lempung-abu layang hampir tidak ada perbedaan. Penambahan 16 % abu layang memiliki perbedaan PI terbesar, disebabkan kadar silika pada campuran yang semakin kecil. Jenis mineral penyusunnya adalah cristobalite dan anorthite. Kadar unsur silika dalam lempung sebesar 40 %, sedangkan dalam abu layang sebesar 20,6 %.
ABSTRACT
Clays Plasticity is very influential in ceramic manufacture using plastic body method, so that didn’t cause any cracking, defecting, or deforming when the process of making ceramics. Plasticity primarily due to the water layer surrounding the silica grains. The existence of an abundance of fly ash is very harmful because they contain various heavy metals. However, since the fly ash contains silica as one major component, it might be used as an additives in ceramics manufacture. One of the traditional ceramic is pottery.
This study investigated the effect of adding the fly ash to the plasticity index (PI) of clay for pottery, compares with the mixtures of clay-CMC and clay- glycerol. The method of PI measurement was Atterberg, while the characterization was conducted are SEM, optical microscope, XRD and XRF.
The results showed that the clay has a PI of 27.22. The addition of CMC increased the PI, while the addition of glycerol decreased the PI. The addition of fly ash of 2 %, 4 %, 6 %, 8 %, 10 %, 12 %, 14 % and 16 % decreased the PI, as 27.32, 26.08, 23.34, 25.30, 22.17, 23.97, 22.56, and 20.74, respectively. Clay particles in the form of plates was measured as 1 µm - 6 µm and pore size distribution was loose. There was no difference in the distribution of all the particles of clay-fly ash mixtures. The addition of 16 % fly ash caused the largest difference in PI, due to the smaller content of silica in the mixture. The major constituent minerals were detected as cristobalite and anorthite. While the concentration of silica in the clay and fly ash are 40 % and 20.6 %, respectively.
