A study of Morphemes used in English translation of surah Al-Kahfi

ABSTRACT

There are some ways of creating word processes namely; coinage, borrowing, compounding, blending,clipping, back formation, conversion, acronyms, derivation and inflection morphemes. In linguistics, morpheme is one of morphology elements.Morphology is "the study of the internal structure of words, and the study of the rules by which words are formed. Fromkin et. al. (2003:76). Related to the background of the study, this study aims to answer three following questions. The first is what kinds of bound morphemes are used in English translation of surah Al-Kahfi, the second is how the processes of bound morphemes are used in English translation of surah Al-Kahfi and the third is what bound morphemes are mostly used in English translation of surah Al-Kahfi.

This research is conducted by using a descriptive qualitative method,because the data of this study are in the form of English translation text. The steps of data collection are reading and understanding the English translation of surah Al-Kahfi text. Then, the researcher selects the data that are related to theproblems of the study. At last, the data are arranged systematically inaccordance to the problems of the study. To analyze the data, the researcher presents thedata, interpreted the data and draws the conclusion.

Based on the result and discussion of the data,it shows that there are two kinds of bound morphemes which are used in English translation of surah Al- Kahfi they are: inflectional and derivational bound morphemes while for derivational bound morphemes process that mostly used in English translation of surah Al-kahfi text is the suffixes. Kinds of suffixes which are used, they are: -ing, -ion, -er, -ly, -ful, -ory, -ice,-y, -age, -ness, -ism, -ance, -ment, -ous, and –able. Meanwhile, prefixes which are used: dis-,a-, im-, re-, and un-. The mostly used of affix is suffix, it is the suffix –ing.

At last, the researcher suggests and has big expectation to the next researcher to be able to explore the bound morphemes process deeply and more specifically in investigating data until it can be better and more perfect in study of morphemes.
