Abstract

ABSTRACT

This study investigates code-switching (CS) used by the students in daily conversation atZainulHasanain Islamic boarding school, Pajarakan, Probolinggo.The students of ZainulHasanain Islamic boarding school as the subject of this study because the students are multilingual and this Islamic boarding school has a regulation for its students to use English and Arabic as compulsory language use in daily conversation. Holmes stated (1992) code switching is a switch which occurs when the speaker shift from one language to another language.

This study uses descriptive method to analyze the code switching interaction. The data are collected from the students daily conversation atZainulHasanain Islamic boarding school. To help analyze the data, Blom’s&Gumperz’s theory in Susanto (2008) is applied.

The result of this study shows that there are three types of code switching used by the students of ZainulHasanain Islamic Boarding School while they are conversing in the school environment. They aretag switching, intersentential code switchingand intrasententialcode switching. There are five functions of code switching found in the students’ utterances of ZainulHasanain Islamic Boarding School. Those are to serve quotation, as an interjection, to clarify or qualify a message, to reiterate and to carry out a referential.The most dominant is to carry out a referential.

Since this study analyzes types and function of code switching use by the students in daily conversation at ZainulHasanain Islamic Boarding School in informal situation. It will be more interesting for the next researchers to analyze it by using another theory of code switching such as Myers-Scotton. The researcher suggests for the next researchers to conduct a research in other situations such as code switching used in daily conversation between teacher and students in formal situation or in informal situation.
