Language styles used by students of Foreign Language Development Institute in Pondok Pesantren Nurul Jadid Paiton Probolinggo (Az-Zainiyah area)

ABSTRACT

Language style is included to linguistic study. Language style is the way people use the language in communication, it can be written or spoken language. Language style can also convey to the listener how to appraise a person during communication with intonation; seriously, humorously, hesitantly or in others ways.

The process of writing this thesis is intended to know the kinds and the application of language style which are used by students of Foreign Language Development Institute in Pondok Pesantren N urul Jadid Paiton Probolinggo. The objective of this study is based on two of research problems. Those are to analyze the kinds of language styles used by students in Foreign Language Development Institute in their daily activities. Then to understand the language styles which are produced by students of Foreign Language Development Institute in their daily activities.

Research method used is descriptive qualitative method or descriptive analysis with explanation of the data descriptively. Whereas the population of this study is female elementary and intermediate students of Foreign Language Development Institute at Pondok Pesantren Nurul Jadid Paiton Probolinggo, with the amount of sample are 30 students. There are 16 students from elementary and 14 from intermediate students of Foreign Language Development Institute.

There are three types of language style which are used by female students of foreign language development institute in Pondok Pesantren Nurul Jadid Paiton Probolinggo. Formal, informal and colloquial style. 1).formal style is used in debate and discussion. 2).The colloquial style is used in story telling. 3). The informal style is used in debate, telling story and discussion. The most dominant of language style used by female students of foreign language development institute in Pondok Pesantren Nurul Jadid Paiton Probolinggo is formal style because in their daily activity they often used it.
