Language styles used by the children characters in Nanny McPhee movie

ABSTRACT

People have their own style in using the language. It is used to make easier the other people in understanding their intention when they communicate. Therefore, nobody speaks in the same style including children. Therefore, this study investigated language style used by the children characters in Nanny McPhee movie.

In conducting this research, the writer uses the descriptive qualitative method since it describes the data which are in the form of sentences and phrases uttered only by the children characters. The theory used to analyze the data is Martin Joos’ theory of language style.

The result of this study shows that the utterances of seven children characters contain four out of five types of language styles. They are formal, consultative, casual, and intimate style. The choice of language style depends on the emotional condition of the characters.

Finally, this study is expected to give contribution toward the readers and further researchers as this study gives the empirical data to enlarge the understanding of the theory of language styles. In addition, further researchers are expected to analyze the real object to get more real understanding of language styles.
