Abstract

ENGLISH :

Teachers want to make all students master their study well; they must apply the appropriate model in their learning process. The Mastery Learning model is a modelthat can solve this problem. The Mastery Learning Model is also one of the models that want to decrease the achievement gap among students. SMPN 5 Malang is one of the schools that implemented this model.

Based upon the preceding discussion, the researcher wants to explore the implementation of mastery learning model in Social Science Study at SMPN 05 grade 8 and to explore the strategies of teachers to decrease the achievement gap among students through mastery learning model at SMPN 05 grade 8.

This research uses descriptive qualitative design. The researcher describedthe data from theresult of interview, observation and documentation.

Based on the result of this research, we can conclude that the implementation of Mastery Learning Model in SMPN 05 Malang focused on Social Science Study is doing well. The implementation began from planning the lesson plan, implementing the mastery- learning model and evaluating the learning outcomes. Teacher used many strategies in the learning process. This action made students understand the social science study materials. Most of students reached the level of mastery, with score more than 76 in social science study. In the implementation process of mastery learning model, the teacher always anticipated in order to make the students understand the material given.

Social science’s teacher used many strategies to decrease achievement gap among students grade 8. Teacher gives students time addition to mastery the material with the special programs. The programs were enrichment and remedial program. Enrichment and remedial program were effective programs to decrease achievement gap. It was proved by the score increase of students who followed remedial program. The strategies had been already used by teachers to make students understand were not only enrichment and remedial program, but also there are other strategies like individual approach strategy and PAIKEM strategy and supported by facilities and intake in SMPN 5 Malang .

Researcher hopes the teacher more pay attention to differences of students. Teacher especially social science teachers must continuously develop their knowledge about learning model.
