Abstract

ABSTRACT

This study investigates codeswitching used by Farah Quinn in “With Farah Quinn” program on Trans TV. The objectives of this study are to find out the type, function and sintagmatic patterns found after the occurrences code switching used by Farah Quinn.

This study uses descriptive qualitative approach is categorized as conversation analysis because the data analyzes the phenomena of code switching interacttion. The data are collected from code switching used by Farah Quinn’s presenter With Farah Quinn with the guest Yukikato and Gunawan which analyzed by using Romaine and Blom & Gumperz’s in Susanto (2008) theories on code switching and sytactical pattern with illocutionary speech act theory by Searle (1975).

The result of this study show that there are three types of code switching used in With Farah Quinn: tag switching, intrasentential switching, and intersentential switching. The function of code switching are as an interjection, to clarify or qualify a message, to reiterate, and to carry out referential. The last finding is syntactical pattern after code switching are noun, adverb, clause, conjuction, modal and pronoun. The whole finding includes in instructive sentence, affirmative sentence, and statement. Those can be clasified in illocutionary speech act directive, commisive, expressive, and declarative. The most dominant is directive

The result of this study is useful for the next researchers to investigate other programs as the subject of the study. The next resercher can be enrich the data to get best result of this study. The next researcher also can identify from the other aspect like reason of code switching. In a In addition, sociolinguistic and discourse analysis may be used to analyze the data.
