Abstract

ABSTRACT

Since the people almost always use language in various forms of communication to fulfill their interaction need, language holds an important part of human life. In the daily communication, however miscommunication may happen when the people communicate each other. It causes the speaker says something which contains an implicit meaning. In order to clarify what the speaker means by her/his utterance, the hearer has to find the interpretation of the utterance. Holy Qur‟an is the central religious text of Islam, which Muslims consider the verbatim word of God. It is mostly written in the hidden meaning which can be interpreted in many sides. Therefore, this study investigates the implicit meaning from the English translation of surah al Qomar by Abdullah Yusuf Ali. The objective of this study is to find out what implicit meanings of the sentences found in the English translation of surah al Qomar by Abdullah Yusuf Ali.

This study uses Spearber and Wilson relevance theory which clarifies its analysis on the implicit meaning. The research design of this study is descriptive qualitative since the data are collected and analyzed without using statistic formula. The data are gathered from the English translation of surah al Qomar by Abdullah Yusuf Ali which contains implicit meanings. This study analyzes the data and makes the conclusion based on the relevance theory.

The results of this study are that the implicit meanings on the English translation of surah al Qomar by Abdullah Yusuf Ali can be categorized into eight categories. They are telling about the Judgment day and Miracle of Prophet, the People of Noah‟s destruction, the People of „Ad‟s destruction, the People of Thamud‟s destruction, the People of Lut‟s destruction, the People of Pharaoh‟s destruction, the admonition of the Unbeliever, and the replying the sinner and the reward for the godfearing person.
