ABSTRACT

Most of the authors and poets use the figurative language to make the poem and song to be prismatic, means that it has more indirect meaning. Figurative language is the language which is usually used by many authors and poets to tell something with unusual manner, namely indirectly tell the meaning. Its words usually have an allusion meaning (Waluyo, 1987: 83). Through this research the researcher decides to find the figurative language that appears in Octavarium album. With the reason mentioned the researcher formulates this research under the title, Figurative Language Used in Dream Theater’s Octavarium Album.

Song itself is identically like poetry. The problem appears through the data that has been chosen by the researcher. The data are eight songs which covered in one album namely Octavarium by Dream Theater which well-known as the progressive metal band. The progressive metal genre is the branch of heavy metal that obviously is the combination between progressive rock and heavy metal. Generally, the power of progressive metal is in its instrument’s arrangement, not in its lyrics. Because of that, the researcher needs to prove that progressive metal song’s lyrics also have beauty.

The researcher divided the analysis into two points. Based on the first statement of the problem, it describes the classification of figurative language in each song. There are several kinds of figurative languages such as; antithesis, hyperbole, imagery, irony, metaphor, personification, paradox, periphrasis, repetition, sarcasm, and simile. The second is the explanation of the meaning within the lyrics which contain figurative of each song. The result of the second question shows the beauty of the each song inside Octavarium album. The researcher found the classification of figurative language and its meaning.

Finally, the researcher is able to find the beauty of Octavarium album. Besides that, the researcher is also getting the goal to prove that the beauty of progressive metal song is not only in its complicated instrumental’s arrangement, but also in its lyrics. Through the figurative language, the researcher is success to prove it.
