The Implicature of Utterances produced by the round characters of Arthur’s movie

ABSTRACT

This study analyzes the utterance containing implicature sentence produced by the round character as it found in Arthur Movie. The study focuses to find out: First, the purpose of the round characters use implicature utterance in Arthur movie. Second, the way of this implicature utterance is responded by the hearer.

This research applies descriptive qualitative method and Grice’s theory of Implicature to analyze the data. The data were collected from utterance produced by the round character found in Arthur movie.

This study shows several findings: First, the round character use implicature utterance in this research to several purposes, such as insulting, annoying, and forcing a guilty. Second, the way the hearer responds to the speaker could be divided into four: 1. Responds to generalized and particularized meanings, only particularized, only generalized, and responds to none both of them. These different responds are possibly happened because the meaning of generalized implicature still could be use to attach another meaning by brings them into another context. The context is imposed by the hearer and speaker as well by stressing on the same or different word.

Finally, the research suggest to the future researchers to conduct further research concerning the study of implicatures used in the other objects such as in real life conversation.
