Grammatical Cohesion on the Translation of Surah Luqman

ABSTRACT

Grammatical cohesion is forms of cohesion realized through grammar. Grammatical cohesion deals with grammatical and semantic connections. The devices of grammatical cohesions are important to know the connectedness and unity on the text because it is needed in making a connectedness and unity the internal structure of the text. Moreover, the sentences, phrases and words of Qur`an (Surah Luqman) are very unique and brief. For that reason, this research is intended to describe the kinds and the functions of grammatical cohesions which are found on the translation of Surah Luqman.

Considering the significance of grammatical cohesion on the translation of Surah Luqman, the main goal of this study is to investigate what kinds and functions of grammatical cohesions which are used on the translation of Surah Luqman. This study uses grammatical cohesion theory in analyzing Surah Luqman to remember us that the reader should read carefully to understand Al-Qur`an. This study is crucial to help the reader to understand Surah luqman such as the reference pronouns, conjunctions, substitutions, and ellipsis words, phrase or clause in the Surah Luqman.

This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative methods, because it depends on description, and the data are taken in the form of words and sentences rather than numbers and statistics. The data in this study are described descriptively based on the kinds and the functions of grammatical cohesion. He analyzed the data using grammatical cohesion by Halliday Hasan`s theory for the kinds and Renkema`s theory for the functions of grammatical cohesion.

The results of the study show the categories of grammatical cohesion and then found the function of grammatical cohesion. The researcher found that the most common used devices are references. The functions are to indicate reference pronoun. Then followed by conjunctions, the functions are to indicate an additional of a fact or idea. After that ellipsis, the functions are to omit the similar noun. And the substitutions are rarely used, the functions are to substitute the similar noun by one or ones. And then, the researcher found unique words: thou (subject you), thee (object you), thy (possessive adjective your), and ye (subject you). All of four these words are indicated as personal references of reference devices.
