Abstract

ABSTRACT

In this study, the researcher concern with the novel entitled Nanny Mc Phee which is written by Christianna Brand. The analysis of this research paper is focused on the major character, “Simon”, based on psychosocial approach. The researcher presents psychosocial of Simons‟ crises in the novel Nanny Mc Phee as subject of the study. The problems of the study are: What kinds of psychosocial crises faced by Simon in Christianna Brands‟ Nanny Mc Phee? What are the external factors that influenced Simons‟ psychosocial crises according to Erikson‟s theory in Christianna Brands‟ Nanny Mc Phee? The objectives of the study: to know what are the psychosocial crises faced by Simon in Christianna Brands‟ Nanny Mc Phee, to know the external factor that influenced Simons‟ psychosocial crises according to Erikson‟s theory in Christianna Brands‟ Nanny Mc Phee.

In doing this research, the writer uses psychosocial theory by Erik Hamburger Erikson. It is a theory which analyzes psychosocial crises related to social factors. Psychosocial believes that the ego exists from birth and that behavior is not totally defensive. This indicated by eight stages which every stage has own specific development that frames individual with a crisis that must be faced.

The result of the research it is found the psychosocial crises of the mai character “Simon” in Christianna Brand‟s Nanny Mc Phee. By recognizing Erikson‟s theory, the reader will be brought to understand the psychosocial crises are influenced by external factors beside crises itself. The crises means that crises he faced in stages form from infancy period, childhood period, external factors means: family, ethnic and culture, and gender.

Simon is able to pass the psychosocial crises stage pretty well. Although he fails the stages in infancy it does not make he fails in the next stages. The crises that Simon‟s faced from infancy, toddler, pre-school and school age period the outcome of Simon‟s psychosocial crises are: mistrust with his parents because they never give him attention and care, doubt Simon‟s got shame and doubt at this age as the continuous of his previous crises then in this stage he feels doubt to everyone who near him, guilt because Simon was faced guilt he feels guilty to everyone who wants to teach him and industry Simon did perfectly in this stage he was built industry by himself, that he never show his ability before then in this stage he was going to be a good son supporting by external factor. In other hand, the external factors which mostly influenced Simon‟s psychosocial crises come from family; it is his beloved nanny, Nanny Mc Phee.
