Abstract
ENGLISH:
The aim of this study was to analyze the language style used by the four judges of the Australian Master Chef cooking competition. This study also aims to reveal how the four Australian Master Chef judges use the language style and the reasons why the Australian Master Chef judges use this type of language style. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The object of this research is the words of the judges in the video Master Chef Australia Season 12 Episode 24 which was taken from Youtube. In analyzing the data, the researcher listened and transcribed the conversation between the judges and contestants based on the theory of Martin Joos (1976). The results showed that there were only four language styles out of five language styles, namely formal, casual, intimate, and consultative language styles. Frozen language style was not found in this study, while casual language was more often used by the judges in this cooking competition event. Keraf's (2009) theory of language style is also used in this study. Based on Keraf's (2009) theory, language style is divided into several parts, namely in terms of word choice, tone, sentence structure and direct or indirect meaning. In this study, it was found that the judges used formal, casual and conversational word choices. In the aspect of tone, it was found that there was a simple style, a medium style, and a grand and strong style in the remarks of the Australian Master Chef judges. Furthermore, rhetorical style was found, while figurative language style was not found. This is due to Australian cultural factors and the characteristics of its people. This study also presents a conversational analysis based on Jefferson's theory (1938-2008). Based on Jeffersonian Transcription, it was found that there were characteristics such as speaking loudly, decreasing tone, slightly rising tone, rising tone, stressing syllables, pausing for a certain duration, and overlapping speech. In this study also found expressions of asking for information, expressing satisfaction, giving information, and giving orders. There are five factors that influence the use of language style, namely participants, setting, topic, function, and social role.
