Abstract
ABSTRACT
Coronary heart disease is the number one cause of death worldwide. The main cause of this disease is clogged arteries caused by the accumulation of lipids, fibrous tissue, and some inflammatory products called atherosclerosis. Early lesions of atherosclerosis are characterized by foam cells. Foam cells are formed by oxidized LDL phagocytosis by macrophages and shaped like foam. The leaves of the lampes (Ocimum sanctum L.) proved to have strong antioxidant, anti-lipoperoxidative and anti-atherogenic that can reduce lipid peroxidation so that are expected to prevent the formation of atherosclerotic lesions. The aim of this study was to identify a decrease of foam cells in New Zealand White aortic rabbit tunica intima which fed with atherogenic diet to ethanol extracts of lampes leaves. This study used a post test only control group design and was conducted on 25 rabbits which were randomly divided into 5 groups with 45 days of treatment. Group 1 was given a normal diet (negative control), group 2 was given an atherogenic diet only (positive control), groups 3 to 5 were given an atherogenic diet plus ethanol extract of lampes leaves with 10 mg/kg/day, 25 mg/kg/day and 50 mg/kg/day orally. The parameter measured was the number of foam cells in the rabbit intortic aortic tunica. Significant results were obtained (Sig. <0.05) between all treatment groups so that it can be concluded that extract of lampes leaves was able to inhibit the formation of foam cells in the aortic rabbit atherosclerosis model.

Penyakit jantung koroner merupakan penyebab kematian nomor satu diseluruh dunia. Penyebab utama penyakit ini adalah penyumbatan arteri yang disebabkan oleh penimbunan lipid, jaringan fibrosa, dan beberapa hasil produk inflamasi atau disebut aterosklerosis. Lesi awal aterosklerosis salah satunya ditandai dengan adanya sel busa. Sel busa terbentuk dari fagositosis LDL teroksidasi oleh makrofag dengan bentuk seperti busa. Daun lampes (Ocimum sanctum L.) terbukti memiliki sifat antioksidan, anti-lipoperoxidatif dan anti-aterogenik yang kuat yang dapat mengurangi peroksidasi lipid sehingga diharapkan dapat mencegah terbentuknya lesi aterosklerosis. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi penurunan jumlah sel busa di tunika intima aorta kelinci New Zealand White yang diberi diet aterogenik terhadap pemberian ekstrak etanol daun lampes. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain post test only control group dan dilakukan pada 25 ekor kelinci yang dibagi secara acak menjadi 5 kelompok dengan perlakuan selama 45 hari. Kelompok 1 diberi diet pakan normal (kontrol negatif), kelompok 2 diberi diet aterogenik saja (kontrol positif), kelompok 3 hingga 5 diberi diet aterogenik ditambah ekstrak etanol daun lampes dengan masing-masing sejumlah 10 mg/kgBB/hari, 25 mg/kgBB/hari dan 50 mg/kgBB/hari secara per oral. Parameter yang diukur adalah jumlah sel busa pada tunika intima aorta kelinci. Diperoleh hasil signifikan (Sig. < 0,05) antara semua kelompok perlakuan sehingga dapat disimpulkan bahwa pemberian ekstrak daun lampes mampu menghambat pembentukan sel busa pada aorta kelinci model aterosklerosis.
