Abstract
INDONESIA:
ENGLISH:
The faujasite zeolite synthesis using Blitar's natural kaolin silica source has been successfully synthesized. Nonreactive kaolin is first converted to reactive through the process of alkaline fusion. The alkali fusion process is carried out with a weight ratio of NaOH/kaolin 2: 1. Synthesis of faujasite zeolite was carried out with variations in the ratio of SiO2/Al2O3 1.5; 3.0; 6.0; and 9.0 without addition of NaOH and with addition of NaOH. Synthesis through the hydrothermal process using a temperature of 100°C for 2 hours. Characterization of kaolin, alkaline fusion product and faujasite zeolite was carried out with XRD, XRF, FTIR and SEM.
Blitar's natural kaolin contains kaolin, impurities in the form of pyrophylites, crystobalites and high quartz. After the alkaline fusion process a sodium silicate product is formed with a number of sodium oxide impurities. Synthesis of faujasite zeolite by addition of NaOH results in faujasite zeolite of NaX type with a higher crystallinity than without the addition of NaOH with the same type of impurities, sodalite in all SiO2/Al2O3 ratios and NaA zeolites at lower SiO2/Al2O3 ratios (1.5 and 3.0) and NaY and NaP zeolite at a high SiO2/Al2O3 ratio (9.0).
The change of kaolin to metakaolin in FTIR spectra is characterized by the disappearance of absorption in the regions 1041, 912, and 797 cm-1 in the alkline fusion product spectra. The synthesized zeolite spectra have absorption at 988, 726, and 556 cm-1 regions, which are typical peaks of faujasite zeolites. The morphology of kaolin in the form of plates that are layered, sodium silicate in the form of spheric particles, while the morphology of zeolite synthesized are cubic crystal.
