Abstract

INDONESIA:

ENGLISH:

Excessive use of social media has become a global mental health problem, especially addiction and depression. This study modifies the SMAD (Social Media Addiction and Depression) mathematical model developed by Ali et al. (2024) by adding a new transmission path in the form of a relapse rate from the Recovered (R(t)) compartment to the Addicted (A(t)) compartment, and analyzing the dynamics of the modified model. The modified model consists of six compartments, namely Susceptible (S(t)), Exposed (E(t)), Addicted (A(t)), Depressed (D(t)), Recovered (R(t)), and Quitters Permanent (Q(t)). The results of the dynamic analysis show that the modified model has two equilibrium points. The addiction-free equilibrium point P_0 always present for positive parameter values, but it is unstable. The endemic equilibrium point of P^* is shown to be locally asymptotically stable when the conditions of existence are met. The basic reproduction number obtained from the Next Generation Matrix at the given parameter value is R_0=1.096649437>1, which means that social media addiction is endemic and will settle in the population. This result is different from the model of Ali et al. (2024) which produces R_0=0.2063593684<1, so that the addition of relapse pathways has been shown to increase R_0 values and change the system condition from addiction-free to endemic. The threshold value is γ^*=0.2987 as the maximum value of the relapse rate that still guarantees addiction-free conditions. Numerical simulations confirm the analytical results and show that the equilibrium value of the addicted population (A(t)) in the modified model is higher and lasts longer than the model of Ali et al. (2024).
