Inappropriate translation made by PKLI translators: A case study at Translanguage

ABSTRACT

The present study aims to find out the inappropriate translation of lexical categories made by the students of PKLI translators compared to the Translanguage Translator. This case study is a descriptive qualitative study primarily directed to describe the translation categories found in the translation products of the study.

To be efficient, the researcher thoroughly compares the source texts version, PKLI translation version, and Translanguage translation version. The errors found are then checked against their source texts to verify and determine which version is more acceptable. The study found that the PKLI translators made inappropriate translations of lexical categories. Lexical errors were found in many idiomatic translations, partial translations, and literal translations that were inappropriate in this study.

In the lexical category, a large part can be considered a matter of inappropriateness. The writer concluded that despite their respectable educational background and experience, it is still hard to translate English text into Indonesian text or vice versa with high precision and exact lexical appropriateness. This was evident when the writer compared the translation text made by PKLI translators to that by the Translanguage translator.

Translanguage translators, however, can achieve this because they have better acquisition and mastery of English. Their knowledge of the English language and experience in translating have greatly helped them understand what the English text wants to convey.
