Literary analysis on the themes and the messages in Robert Burns' and Robert Browning's poems

ABSTRACT

Literature is a product of human creativity, an art work. It is an imaginative writing, which can be used to express many aspect of life as emotion, idea, feeling and experience. In this study. It will be focused on one literature a branch that is poetry. Studying poetry actually more difficult than studying another branches of literature, because it tell many thing in a little word or sometimes only in the symbol form.

There are some reasons why the writer chooses this topic. By reading the poem, we may acquire knowledge about how to appreciate and also know the theme and message of Poem, because every poet has certain characteristics in his work. Therefore in this research, the writer will discuss the theme and the messages presented on Robert Burns and Robert Browning poems. Theme is the central concept developed in a poem. While message is something expressed in spoken or written passed from a person to another person.
The research problems of this study are; what are the themes presented in Robert Burns and Robert Browning poems? What are the messages presented in Robert Burns and Robert Browning poems? While the purpose of the study are to clarify the themes presented in Robert Burn and Robert Browning and to find out and understand the messages are presented in Robert Burns and Robert Browning. The scope of this study is limited on six poems.

In this study the writer used descriptive qualitative research, there are some steps which done by him, the step how he obtained and collected all data to be observed by reading and understanding poem that written by Robert Burns and Robert Browning, selecting the data that are related with the purpose of the study and arranging the data systematically in accordance to the problem of the study. To collaborate the data, triangulation is used in this study. The writer decides to use triangulation of data source and methodological triangulation. After the data had been collected, then the data were presented, discussed, analysed, and concluded. After that found out the themes and messages and the writer made tentative conclusion. The results of this study show that most of poems have themes and message about love.

Finally the writer hopes to the other researcher or to the student who are interested in analysing the similar topic are able to develop this study by analysing different of view, because there are still many elements have not been analysed yet.
