Compliments in the obituary speeches of Queen Elizabeth II on Sky News YouTube channel

This research focuses on the selection of appropriate context and diction by looking at the types and functions of compliments in the obituary speeches of Queen Elizabeth II. The researcher used the descriptive qualitative method and Wolfson's theory (1983) to analyze the type and function of compliments in the obituary speeches of Queen Elizabeth II on Sky News' YouTube channel. The researcher used seven videos on the Sky News YouTube channel uploaded in September 2022. The results showed that there were four types of compliments found in the obituary speech of Queen Elizabeth II. The highest type of compliment is possession with 21 and have a percentage of 49%. The second dominant type of compliment is a general ability with 16 and have a percentage of 37%. Then, for other types of compliments, there are 5 and have a percentage of 12% for the specific act ability, and 1 and have a percentage of 2% for personal appearance. Meanwhile, this study also shows that there are three types of compliment functions found in the obituary speech of Queen Elizabeth II. The highest function is a function of compliment to create or strengthen with 22 and has a percentage of 51%. The second dominant function of compliment is functions of compliment to express positive evaluation with 20 and has a presentation of 47%. Then, for other functions, 1 and has a percentage of 2% for compliment functions to increase solidarity. The conclusion of this study is that the most widely used type of compliment is possession. Meanwhile, the most widely used function is function of compliment to create or strengthen. Compliments in this speech are used to express love, admiration, and affection to the Queen for the last time. The research results found are expected to help raise readers' awareness of the importance of choosing the right context and diction in delivering compliments. In addition, the researcher hopes that future researchers will conduct further research on compliments with different topics.

Penelitian ini berfokus pada pemilihan konteks dan diksi yang tepat dengan melihat jenis dan fungsi pujian di dalam pidato kematian Ratu Elizabeth II. Peneliti menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dan teori Wolfson (1983) untuk menganalisis tipe dan fungsi pujian dalam pidato kematian Ratu Elizabeth II di saluran YouTube Sky News. Peneliti menggunakan tujuh video pada saluran YouTube Sky News yang di unggah pada bulan September 2022. Hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada empat jenis pujian yang ditemukan di dalam pidato kematian Ratu Elizabeth II. Tipe pujian tertinggi adalah kepemilikan dengan jumlah 21 dan memiliki presentase 49%. Tipe pujian dominan kedua adalah kemampuan umum dengan jumlah 16 dan memiliki presentase 37%. Kemudian, untuk tipe pujian lainnya yaitu 5 dan memiliki presentase 12% untuk kemampuan bertindak secara spesifik, dan 1 dan memiliki presentase 2% untuk penampilan pribadi. Sementara itu, dalam penelitian ini juga menunjukkan bahwa ada tiga fungsi pujian yang ditemukan di dalam pidato kematian Ratu Elizabeth II. Fungsi pujian tertinggi adalah pujian berfungsi untuk menciptakan atau memperkuat dengan jumlah 22 dan memiliki presentase 51%. Fungsi pujian dominan kedua adalah pujian berfungsi untuk mengekspresikan evaluasi positif dengan jumlah 20 dan memiliki presentasi 47%. Kemudian, untuk gejala lainnya yaitu 1 dan memiliki presentasi 2% untuk pujian berfungsi untuk meningkatkan solidaritas. Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini adalah tipe pujian yang paling banyak digunakan adalah kepemilikan. Sedangkan, fungsi yang paling banyak digunakan adalah pujian berfungsi untuk menciptakan atau memperkuat. Pujian di dalam pidato ini digunakan untuk mengungkapkan rasa cinta, kekaguman, dan kasih sayang kepada Ratu untuk terakhir kalinya. Hasil penelitian yang ditemukan diharapkan dapat membantu meningkatkan kesadaran pembaca akan pentingnya memilih konteks dan diksi yang tepat dalam menyampaikan pujian. Selain itu, Peneliti berharap kepada peneliti selanjutnya untuk melakukan penelitian lebih lanjut tentang pujian dengan topik yang berbeda.
