Abstract
ABSTRACT
The concept of social class status encompasses a number of variables, including family income, parent’s level of education, and parent’s occupation. Student’s school performance is correlated with socio-economic status (SES). Higher socio-economic status (SES) student tends to have higher academic achievement, and lower socio-economic status (SES) tend to have lower academic achievement and to be at greater risk for dropping out of school. As students from lower social class status families move through the grade levels, they fall further and further behind their higher social class status peers.
Unfortunately, the educational environment itself contributes in a number of ways to the low academic achievement of the low social class. The poor neighborhoods tend to have meager facilities and less of time to study, and then, intelligence score and student’s achievement are in general, positively correlated with the social class or socioeconomic status of the individual.
The investigation of the research entitled “A Comparative Study of Student’s Achievement in the High and Low-Social Classes at MAN Malang I Tlogomas-Malang” located in The State Islamic Senior High School I (MAN Malang I) Tlogomas, at Baiduribulan St, No 40 Malang.
The design of this research is quantitative design, and its designed to find out the comparative between student’s achievement in the high and low- social classes. The method of this research is descriptive quantitative method and the data will be examined using t-test (independent sample test). It’s used to compare the average score of student’s achievement from high to the low- social class.
There are two hypotheses in this research: Ha/alternative hypothesis (students’ achievements are different in different social classes) and Ho/null hypothesis (students’ achievements are not different in different social classes).
The result of the data analysis in this research shows that Ho is accepted and Ha is rejected. It means that “the students’ achievements are not different in different social classes.” And there are two factors are influenced on student’s achievement; the internal and external factors. But, the most influence factor in this research is the internal factor.
