Abstract

ABSTRACT

Comics as one of communication between the reader and the writer, comic has unique characters because it combines between pictorial and verbal communication. The focus of interest of this study is what word formation is mostly used in the Jakarta Post and is there any special type of word-formation used in the comic series.

The objective of this research is to describe the word formation process that is mostly used in the comic of the Jakarta Post and to identify the special type of word formation process used in the comic of the Jakarta Post. This research is designed by using descriptive qualitative method. They are analyzed inductively through the observation done by the researcher herself. The data are collected from comic of the Jakarta Post Newspaper.

Research instruments used to get the data. The researcher herself is the suitable instrument because the data is available in printed materials. The analysis of the data is presenting the data, include the comics in brief and the gathered words, developing table of the result. And the last is interpreting the result in the data interpretation.

As the result, the researcher finds that the main findings of this study
include first of all, the word formation is mostly used in Jakarta Post, are: Derivation, Compounding, Shortening, Acronym, and Blends. Then 52.2 % Derivation, 19.4 % Compounding, 18.5 % Shortening, 0.17 % Acronym, and 0.17
% Blends. And the last, the special type of word formation used in the comic of the Jakarta Post, the researcher finds that there are 9.3 % Unidentified.

Since this study only discusses what mostly used and is there any special type of word formation; however, it will be interesting to study other phenomenon of word formation. For example, in advertised media. Finally, the researcher suggest to the next researchers to study in other aspect in order to enrich the understanding about word-formation.
