Abstract
INDONESIA:
Limbah bubut besi mengandung unsur besi yang sangat besar. Limbah tersebut berpotensi mencemari lingkungan sehingga diperlukan usaha untuk mengatasinya. Salah satu usaha pemanfaatan limbah tersebut adalah sebagai bahan baku sintesis pigmen hematit (α-Fe2O3). Dalam penelitian ini, pigmen hematit disintesis dengan metode presipitasi-sonikasi variasi konsentrasi agen pengendap urea, yakni 1; 1,5 dan 4,5 M. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruhnya terhadap kristalinitas, ukuran kristal, distribusi warna, morfologi serta pengaruhnya terhadap swelling kayu. Hasil sintesis dikarakterisasi menggunakan teknik difraksi sinar-X (XRD), color reader dan SEM-EDX serta aplikasi untuk mengurangi swelling pada kayu. Hasil karakterisasi XRD pada semua sampel menunjukkan terbentuknya fasa hematit. Semakin tinggi konsentrasi urea yang digunakan maka kristalinitas, ukuran kristal serta kemurnian fasa hematit yang diperoleh meningkat. Hasil uji warna menunjukkan semua sampel masuk dalam rentang standar warna hematit. Hasil SEM menunjukkan bahwa morfologi sampel tidak merata, partikel didominasi bentuk bulat dan masih terjadi aglomerasi. Hematit variasi urea 4,5 M memiliki ukuran partikel paling seragam. Hasil uji swelling kayu menunjukkan bahwa hematit variasi urea 1 M menghasilkan efektivitas tertinggi untuk mengurangi swelling kayu, yakni 42,26-48,14 %.
ENGLISH:
Iron lathe waste contains a very high iron element. The waste has the potential to become pollution, therefore it needs to be solved. One of the ways to utilize the waste is as a source for hematite (α-Fe2O3). In this study, hematite pigments were synthesized by precipitation-sonication method and the concentration of urea was varied using 1; 1.5 and 4.5 M. The aims of this study was to determine its effect on crystallinity, crystal size, color distribution, morphology and its effect on swelling of wood. The synthesis results were characterized using XRD, color reader and SEM-EDX. The samples were employed to reduce swelling of wood. The X-ray diffraction pattern showed that the hematite phase is formed in all samples. The higher concentration of urea cause the crystallinity, crystal size, and purity of the hematite phase increases. Color reader results showed all sample colors are in the standard range of colors hematite. SEM results showed that the morphology of the sample is uneven, particles are dominated by spherical shape and agglomeration still occurs. Hematite 4.5 M has the most uniform particle size. Based on the results of the wood swelling test, hematite 1 M produces the highest effectivity to reduce swelling of wood, which is 42.26-48.14 %.
