Abstract
INDONESIA:
ENGHLISH:
Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is an aquatic plant that is considered a weed in water. On the other hand, 64.51% of the cellulose compound in water hyacinth has the potential to absorb metal because it has a hydroxyl group (OH). Demineralization using 0.1 M HNO3 in biomass is used to reduce mineral content. After modification of biomass was carried out using 1 M citric acid to convert the hydroxyl and carboxyl (COOH) groups to form C=O ester group. The results of biomass modification were applied to adsorb copper metal (Cu) with variations of contact time: 0, 30, 60, 120, and 180 minutes. Observations were made on decreasing the concentration of copper metal for a certain time and were analyzed using the atomic adsorption spectroscopy (AAS) instrument. The results showed the copper metal adsorption kinetics followed the second order reaction. Characterization using FTIR after the modification process showed that there was a typical absorption at wave number 1736 cm-1. The absorption is the vibration of the C=O ester groups, where there is no absorption at the biomass before modification. The XRF results show an increase in the percentage of Cu metal after the adsorption process by 0.03% to 23.7%.
