Unfulfilled desires of the main character in Gail Honeyman’s Eleanor oliphant is completely fine

This study examines the unfulfilled desires of the main character in Gail Honeyman's novel Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine through the framework of Jacques Lacan's psychoanalysis. The phenomenon of emotional loneliness in modern life is often experienced by individuals who appear to be socially functioning, but harbor a deep inner emptiness. It is a condition that psychologically rooted in desires that are never truly fulfilled. The novel represents this phenomenon through Eleanor Oliphant character. She is a woman who lives in extreme isolation. She also builds an illusion of wholeness behind her regular routine. This study aims to answer two main questions. What unfulfilled desires shape Eleanor's self-perception through her relationships with others. And how these desires reveal the illusion of wholeness in Eleanor's life. The method used is literary criticism with a literary psychology approach. It is applying Lacanian concepts such as lack, desire, the Other, objet petit a, split subject, and fantasy as a tool for the analysis. The results show that Eleanor's self-perception was shaped by four unfulfilled desires. First is the desire for the mother's approval. Second is the desire for normality. Next is the desire for love. And last is the desire for absolution. These four desires stem from her mother's dominance as the Other which instills a deep sense of inadequacy from Eleanor's childhood. The illusion of wholeness that Eleanor builds collapse through three stages. The deconstruction of the completely fine fantasy, the detachment from the authority of the Other, and the acceptance of herself as a divided subject. The study concludes that Eleanor's journey is about learning to live honestly with her fragmentation. It also about the illusion of wholeness itself collapses as a form of liberation.

Studi ini meneliti hasrat karakter utama yang tidak terpenuhi dalam novel Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine karya Gail Honeyman. Penelitian ini dilakukan melalui kerangka psikoanalisis Jacques Lacan. Fenomena kesepian emosional dalam kehidupan modern sering dialami oleh individu yang tampak berfungsi secara sosial. Namun, menyimpan kekosongan batin yang mendalam. Ini adalah kondisi psikologis yang berakar pada hasrat tidak terpenuhi. Novel ini mewakili fenomena ini melalui karakter Eleanor Oliphant. Ia adalah seorang wanita yang hidup dengan mengisolasi dirinya sendiri dengan ekstrem. Dia juga membangun ilusi keutuhan di balik rutinitasnya. Studi ini bertujuan untuk menjawab dua pertanyaan utama. Hasrat yang tidak terpenuhi membentuk persepsi diri Eleanor melalui hubungannya dengan orang lain. Dan bagaimana hasrat tidak terpenuhi ini mengungkap ilusi keutuhan dalam kehidupan Eleanor. Metode yang digunakan pada studi ini adalah kritik sastra dengan pendekatan psikologi sastra.
