Posthuman subjectivity depicted by the main characters in Ken Liu’s short stories

The development of digital technology has changed the way humans understand their identity, consciousness, and relationship with technology. In contemporary literature, these changes are often represented through characters who live side by side with artificial intelligence systems and digital simulations. This study analyzes posthuman subjectivity represented by the main characters in the short stories The Perfect Match and Simulacrum by Ken Liu using N. Katherine Hayles' posthuman theory. This study aims to identify the characteristics of posthuman subjectivity and analyze how technology influences the formation of the characters' identities. The research data consists of narratives, dialogues, and descriptions that show the interaction between humans and technology in both short stories. The results show that posthuman subjectivity is represented through four main characteristics, namely informational pattern over material instantiation, consciousness as an epiphenomenon, the body as the original prosthesis, and seamlessly articulated with intelligent machines. In The Perfect Match, these characteristics are seen through Sai's dependence on Tilly's artificial intelligence system that directs various aspects of his life. Meanwhile, in Simulacrum, posthuman subjectivity emerges through digital simulations that allow human identity and memory to be reproduced in virtual space. This study concludes that both short stories depict human identity as a construct formed through relations with technology, so that the boundaries between humans and machines become increasingly blurred.

Perkembangan teknologi digital telah mengubah cara manusia memahami identitas, kesadaran, dan hubungan mereka dengan teknologi. Dalam sastra kontemporer, perubahan tersebut sering direpresentasikan melalui tokoh-tokoh yang hidup berdampingan dengan sistem kecerdasan buatan dan simulasi digital. Penelitian ini menganalisis subjektivitas pasca-manusia yang direpresentasikan oleh tokoh utama dalam cerpen The Perfect Match dan Simulacrum karya Ken Liu menggunakan teori posthuman N. Katherine Hayles. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi karakteristik subjektivitas pasca-manusia serta menganalisis bagaimana teknologi memengaruhi pembentukan identitas tokoh. Data penelitian berupa narasi, dialog, dan deskripsi yang menunjukkan interaksi antara manusia dan teknologi dalam kedua cerpen. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa subjektivitas pasca-manusia direpresentasikan melalui empat karakteristik utama, yaitu informational pattern over material instantiation, consciousness as an epiphenomenon, the body as the original prosthesis, dan seamlessly articulated with intelligent machines. Dalam The Perfect Match, karakteristik tersebut terlihat melalui ketergantungan Sai terhadap sistem kecerdasan buatan Tilly yang mengarahkan berbagai aspek kehidupannya. Sementara itu, dalam Simulacrum, subjektivitas pasca-manusia muncul melalui simulasi digital yang memungkinkan identitas dan memori manusia direproduksi dalam ruang virtual. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa kedua cerpen menggambarkan identitas manusia sebagai konstruksi yang dibentuk melalui relasi dengan teknologi, sehingga batas antara manusia dan mesin menjadi semakin kabur.
