The main character’s fundamental questions of human existence described in dan brown‘s origin: Structural analysis

ABSTRACT

The fundamental questions about human existence are philosophical questions related to the origin and ultimate purpose of human life. In literary works, these questions are often represented through characters, conflicts, and theme development to illustrate man's search for the meaning of his existence. This study analyzes the fundamental questions about human existence posed by the main character in Dan Brown's novel Origin using Jonathan Culler's structuralist approach. This research aims to identify the fundamental questions posed by Edmond Kirsch as well as analyze how these questions are responded to by other characters in the novel. The research data consists of words, phrases, sentences, dialogues, and narratives that represent fundamental questions about human existence in novels. The results of the study show that Edmond Kirsch asked two fundamental questions, namely "Where do we come from?" and "Where are we going?". The first question represents the search for the origin of human life, while the second question represents the search for the future and ultimate purpose of humanity. Both questions are built through their relationship with the intrinsic elements of the novel, namely, characters, plot, setting, conflict, and theme. In addition, the responses of other figures show different points of view on the relationship between science and religion. Robert Langdon viewed science and religion as two ways in which human existence could be understood, while Bishop Valdespino rejected Edmond's discovery as a threat to religious beliefs. Thus, this study shows that fundamental questions about human existence are central to the narrative structure that establishes themes and develops the main conflicts between science and religion in the novel.

Pertanyaan-pertanyaan mendasar tentang eksistensi manusia merupakan pertanyaan filosofis yang berkaitan dengan asal-usul dan tujuan akhir kehidupan manusia. Dalam karya sastra, pertanyaan-pertanyaan tersebut sering direpresentasikan melalui tokoh, konflik, dan pengembangan tema untuk menggambarkan pencarian manusia terhadap makna keberadaannya. Penelitian ini menganalisis pertanyaan-pertanyaan mendasar tentang eksistensi manusia yang diajukan oleh tokoh utama dalam novel Origin karya Dan Brown menggunakan pendekatan strukturalisme dari Jonathan Culler. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi pertanyaan-pertanyaan mendasar yang diajukan oleh Edmond Kirsch serta menganalisis bagaimana pertanyaan-pertanyaan tersebut direspons oleh tokoh-tokoh lain dalam novel. Data penelitian terdiri atas kata, frasa, kalimat, dialog, dan narasi yang merepresentasikan pertanyaan-pertanyaan mendasar tentang eksistensi manusia dalam novel. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Edmond Kirsch mengajukan dua pertanyaan mendasar, yaitu “Where do we come from?” dan “Where are we going?”. Pertanyaan pertama merepresentasikan pencarian mengenai asal-usul kehidupan manusia, sedangkan pertanyaan kedua merepresentasikan pencarian mengenai masa depan dan tujuan akhir umat manusia. Kedua pertanyaan tersebut dibangun melalui keterkaitannya dengan unsur-unsur intrinsik novel, yaitu karakter, alur, latar, konflik, dan tema. Selain itu, respons tokoh-tokoh lain menunjukkan sudut pandang yang berbeda terhadap hubungan antara sains dan agama. Robert Langdon memandang sains dan agama sebagai dua cara yang dapat digunakan untuk memahami eksistensi manusia, sedangkan Bishop Valdespino menolak penemuan Edmond karena dianggap mengancam keyakinan keagamaan. Dengan demikian, penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pertanyaan-pertanyaan mendasar tentang eksistensi manusia menjadi pusat struktur naratif yang membangun tema serta mengembangkan konflik utama antara sains dan agama dalam novel.
