Abstract

English

The dominant white society in the United State feels that they have the most power in all aspects. This study analyzes various forms of oppression carried out by white society against the Black community and analyzes how the Black Community resists the acts of oppression they experience. Forms of oppression and resistance are found in Maya Angelou’s poems The Calling of Names, My Arkansas, Momma Welfare Roll, The Mothering Blackness, and A Brave and Startling Truth. The research method employed in this study is literary criticism, utilizing a decolonial theory approach developed by a group of Latin American scholars, including Quijano, Mignolo, Maldonado-Torres, Lugones, and Walsh. The results of this study indicate that there are four forms of oppression experienced by the Black community: historical and political oppression, economic oppression, cultural and linguistic oppression, and psychological oppression, which continue to persist in the modern era in more subtle forms. This study also identified five forms of resistance practiced by the Black community: epistemic resistance, re-existence, decolonial memory, economic resistance, and pluriversal vision. This study demonstrates that Maya Angelou’s poetry is not merely a literary work but also contains numerous memories of the oppression and resistance experienced by the Black community, serving as a warming to society to pay attention to acts of violence that continue to occur to this day.
